CAROLINE SLACK

A service to celebrate the life of Caroline Slack was held Nov. 4 at St. James Episcopal Church in Coquille. Ms. Slack died on Oct. 29 in Kirkland, Washington, of cancer.

Ms. Slack was born on Nov. 7, 1963 in Myrtle Point. She attended elementary and high school in Coquille and graduated in 1982. In 1986, she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in fashion merchandising from Oregon State University. While in college, she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

Ms. Slack loved children and water sports, and as a teenager she was a swimming instructor and life guard at the Coquille Swimming Pool. After graduating from college, she worked for the Bon Marché. She spent six years managing various departments in the North Bend store and for the last two years she worked as an assistant buyer in the Bon's corporate office in Seattle. Ms. Slack was especially loved for her vivacious personality, for the straight forward responses, for her sense of personal style, and for the sweet and caring nature of her character.

Ms. Slack is survived by her beloved partner, Rod Russell of Renton, Washington; parents, Harry and [step-mother] JoAnne Slack of Coquille; sister and brother-in-law, Helen Slack Miller and Eddie Miller, and nieces Lauren and Hannah Miller, of Portland; brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Claudia Slack, and nephews, Andrew and Sam Slack, of Coos Bay; step-sister, Laura Berryhill and step-brother, Bob Berryhill, both of Eugene; grandmother, Kathryn Slack, of Myrtle Point; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins and many close friends. Ms. Slack was preceded in death by her mother, Marion Moore Slack, in 1982.

Ms. Slack's family suggests that donations in her memory may be made to Evergreen Hospice Center, 12822 124th Lane, N.E., Kirkland, WA 98034; or to South Coast Hospice, 1620 Thompson Road, Coos Bay OR 97420.

Arrangements were through Amling/Schroeder Funeral Service.

Caroline packed a lot into her brief time with us. She loved cats and children and was a fashionista-extraordinaire. Caroline was a joy. If you knew her, you loved her. She fought as hard as she could before a brain tumor finally claimed her. She is missed so very much.

Catherine Slack married Robert James Holmes on 12 March 1874 at Tazewell Co., IL. Catherine Slack lived on 23 June 1880 at Everett Precinct, Dodge Co., NE, farming.⁴ She lived on 2 July 1900 at Gridley Twp., McLean Co., IL, farming.³ She died on 22 November 1929 at Fargo, Ellis Co., OK, at age 74. She was buried in November 1929 at Fargo Cemetery, Fargo, Ellis Co., OK, Findagrave #78705092.

     Elizabeth Slack was born circa 1849 at Tazewell Co., IL.^1,2 She was the daughter of John L. Slack and Jane Berry. Elizabeth Slack lived on 14 June 1870 at Washington Twp., Tazewell Co., IL, with her parents.² She died after 14 June 1870.

     Elizabeth Slack was also known as Lizzie. She was born circa 1866 at Illinois Not sure whether Elizabeth Monnett was the mother -- 1880 census does not show the mother's first name.¹ She was the daughter of Henry Slack.¹

     Elizabeth Ann Slack was also known as "Betsy".¹ She was born in 1825 at Hampshire Co., VA, per 1850 census. 1860 shows age 31.^1,2 She was the daughter of James Slack Jr. and Mary Ann Larimore. Elizabeth Ann Slack lived in 1880 at Washington Twp., Tazewell Co., IL, with her sister Elizabeth and brother George. Her father's will specified that her sister Elizabeth and brother George were to support her for the rest of her life. She apparently was disabled, or partially so.³

     Emily Slack was born in 1852 at Tazewell Co., IL. She was the daughter of Abraham Slack and Catherine Berry. Emily Slack died in 1913 at Tazewell Co., IL.

     George Slack was born in 1842 at Lima Twp. (probably), Licking Co., OH.¹ He was the son of James Slack Jr. and Mary Ann Larimore. George Slack lived on 2 September 1850 at Tazewell Co., IL.¹ He lived in 1880 at Washington Twp., Tazewell Co., IL.²

Slack and Mary Helena Webb.¹ Harry Allen Slack Sr. married Helen Mary Sherwood on 21 August 1926 at Coquille, Coos Co., OR. Harry Allen Slack Sr. married Catherine Everett Staihar in 1942. Harry Allen Slack Sr. died on 4 February 1988 at Coos Bay, Coos Co., OR, at age 87

Harry A. Slack, Sr.

Services for Harry A. Slack, Sr., 87, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, February 8 at St. James Episcopal Church in Coquille, with Father Don Eaton officiating. Interment will be at Masonic Cemetery, Coquille.

Mr. Slack was born July 15, 1900 at Delevan (sic), Illinois, and died Feb. 4, 1988 at Coos Bay. Mr. Slack assumed the law practice of A.J. Sherwood in Coquille in 1930. He practiced law in Coquille until December, 1987, and was associated with the law firm of Slack, Stone and Gillespie in Coquille. He was admitted to practice before Oregon and Federal Courts, including the Supreme Court of the United States.

Mr. Slack was active in community affairs and was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Coquille, the Masons Lodge, Coos Curry Shrine Club, Hillah Temple, Coquille Valley Elks Lodge, Coquille Lions Club, American Bar Association, Oregon State Bar Association and was a past member of the Board of Bar Governors of the Oregon State Bar Association.

He married Helen Sherwood in 1925 in Coquille, and they had two children. She preceded him in death in July, 1940. He married Kathryn Everett Staihar of Eugene in 1942.

Mr. Slack was active in community affairs and was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Coquille, the Masonic Lodge, Coos-Curry Shrine Club, Hillah Temple, Coquille Valley Elks Lodge, Coquille Lions Club, American Bar Association, and was a past member of the Board of Bar Governors of the Oregon State Bar Association.
