Article from the newspaper in Fredonia, Kansas, dated 1921:
One interesting event in Fredonia today was the celebration of the 80th birthday anniversary of Mr. James Smethurst at the Smethurst home, 227 North 8th Street.
The elderly gentleman was born in England and was brot to America when but two months of age. His father and mother became citizens of Ohio, residing at Zanesville. Later the family moved to Wisconsin.
Two brothers of Mr. Smethurst, one older and one younger, arrived earlier this week to join Mr. and Mrs. Smethurst and other relatives at both the birthday dinner and supper. The brothers, Mr. John and Mr. W. B. Smethurst, live in Cedar Lodge Edge, Colorado.
Other guests were the three children of Mr. and Mrs. Smethurst, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smethurst, a son and his wife, of Wauzeka, Wisconsin; a daughter, Mrs. Robert Campbell, of Steuben, Wisconsin; and Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Price and children, Miss Madge, Claire and younger son, James, of Fredonia.
Letters were read during the day from absent grandchildren among them one from Miss Lucille Price, who is spending the summer in a camp at Yellowstone park.
One feature of the dinner was the birthday cake with its 80 candles. The menu was elaborate and delicious. Everyone present enjoyed the day and the good fellowship of loved ones.
The best wishes of Fredonia friends and their congratulations are extended to Mr. Smethurst on this, his 80th birthday. That he may enjoy the good health and the celebration of many more birthdays, is the wish of his many friends.
