Snapp and Rachel Quee Wilson.1 James W. Snapp married Sarah Elizabeth Crowley, daughter of James N. Crowley and Susan Emily Hargraves, in 1883 at Missouri, no children.2 Occupation: Hotel Proprietor in 1910 at Snapp's Hotel, West River Street, Excelsior Springs, Clay Co., MO.3 James W.      Jessie Cornelia Snapp was born on 20 July 1889 at Winchester, Frederick Co., VA.1 She was the daughter of Camillus E. Snapp and Mary Alice Brill.2 Jessie Cornelia Snapp married Jacob Conley Hoover, son of George Henry Hoover and Laura Virginia Mason, on 17 October 1906 at Winchester, Frederick Co., VA. Jessie Cornelia Snapp lived on 4 April 1930 at Hedgesville Grade, Falling Waters District, Berkeley Co., WV.3 She died on 3 June 1930 at Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., WV, at age 40. She was buried in June 1930 at Harmony Cemetery, Marlowe, Berkeley Co., WV, Findagrave #122185129.

Johannes Snapp

M, b. 1746, d. 12 December 1818
     Johannes Snapp was also known as "John".
Note: John Snapp was a Revolutionary War soldier (as were most of his brothers) in Capt. John Tipton's Company of Dunmore, Shenandoah County, Militia with the rank of Ensign (see Revolutionary War Records - Virginia by Brumbaugh). He was also a Tax collector for Lord Fairfax. He sold horses to George Washington. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace by Governor Patrick Henry on August 27, 1778 in Shenandoah Co. About 1790 he purchased 694 acres on Mill Creek, Rockingham County, Virginia (named Meadow View). This land he purchased from Thomas Stephenson the son of John Stephenson, the earliest settler in the Mill Creek Valley. At that time he was one of the largest landowners in Rockingham Co. By an Act of Assembly passed December 7, 1791 he was made a trustee of the newly formed town of Keezletown along with George Houston and five other citizens. (Hennings Statutes, Vol. 13, p. 297). In 1792 he was granted an ordinary (tavern) license at this home on Mill Creek. This land and tavern were later sold to David Kyle. July 26, 1793 he purchased an additional 275 Acres and in February 1815 sold 352 acres for $18,500. October 20, 1814 he purchased 296 acres for $1,000.00 on both sides of Limestone Creek, Washington County, Tennessee near Greene County. His daughter, Susannah Snapp, married George Houston, uncle to Sam Houston.

He was born in 1746 at Frederick Co., VA.1 He was the son of Lorentz Schnepp and Margaretha Stephan. Johannes Snapp married Anna Maria Wendel, daughter of Christophel Wendel and Catherine Brumbach, in 1770 at Strasburg, Shenandoah Co., VA. Johannes Snapp lived in 1784 at Rockingham Co., VA.1 He died on 12 December 1818 at Washington Co., TN. He was buried in December 1818 at Old Snapp Cemetery, Greene Co., TN.

John Snapp

M, b. 1788, d. 7 July 1830
     John Snapp began military service : John Snapp was a Captain of the 58th Regiment of Rockingham County Militia, War of 1812. (source - Walter Burgner.) He was born in 1788 at Mill Creek Valley, Rockingham Co., VA. He was the son of Johannes Snapp and Anna Maria Wendel. John Snapp married Elizabeth Cook, daughter of Henry Cook and Mary Magdalena Hudlow, on 20 October 1807 at Harrisonburg, Rockingham Co., VA. John Snapp died on 7 July 1830 at Greene Co., TN.

John Snapp

     John Snapp was also known as Johannes. He was born in 1721 at Alsace. He was the son of Johannes Schnepp and Barbara Dutt. John Snapp immigrated in August 1733 to Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA; on the ship Samuel. He married Catherine (?) circa 1744. John Snapp was naturalized in May 1746 at Winchester, Frederick Co., VA; Frederick County Order Book 2, at page 194.
Note: In April 1750 he obtained a survey for 400 acres along Little North Mountain. He also obtained a survey of 315 acres 21 May 1753 on the head branches of Hogs Creek & Cedar Creek adjacent John Dyer with patent granted 17 May 1762. (Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants, Vol II, Book G). He also received his father's 400 acre farm in 1762.

He was a foot soldier in the French and Indian War in Captain Lewis Stephens Company of Frederick County. He was discharged September 2, 1755 (Frederick County Militia Records Book 18).

His will was written August 20, 1786, and it was probated on December 6, 1786 (Frederick County Will Book "5", at page 152.) In his will, John Jr left 400 acres to his son Jacob, another 400 acres to his son, Joseph, and the 315 acre tract to his daughter, Catherine Spelman. He died in 1786 at Frederick Co., VA.

John Henry Snapp

     Note: John H. Snapp came to Macomb township in McDonough Co, IL in 1834, settling about two miles north of Bardolph. He lived here until 1854, when he removed to Sullivan Co., Missouri, where he died in 1872. He was born in East Tennessee, in 1809, where he resided until he came to this county. A son of Mr. Snapp, Alexander, still resides in the county, living in Walnut Grove township. Joseph Snapp

     Note: Joseph Snapp lived on a portion of the original Snapp homestead in western Frederick County. His wife, Mary Magdalena, was a daughter of Henry Clowser, who was killed in an Indian attack in 1764. Clowser's wife and his three daughters, ages 5, 7, & 10 were taken captive and held for about six months. Samuel Kercheval, an early area historian, mentions that the mother and daughters returned unharmed and that the daughters grew up, married and had families of their own. At the time he wrote his history in 1832 all three were widows, living in his neighborhood and he named them as Mrs. Schultz, Mrs. Snapp and Mrs. Frye (Samuel Kercheval, "A History of the Valley of Virginia", 1925 pp 98-99.) Joseph Snapp was born on 30 January 1761 at Frederick Co., VA. He was the son of John Snapp and Catherine (?) Joseph Snapp married Mary Magdalena Clowser, daughter of Henry Clowser, circa 1782. Joseph Snapp died on 8 August 1825 at Frederick Co., VA, at age 64.
