A memorial service for Alfred Wallace Starling Sr., 98, Hopkinsville, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Charlie Evans officiating.

The body was cremated, and burial of remains will be at Riverside Cemetery.

Hughart, Beard and Giles Funeral Home, Hopkinsville is in charge of arrangements.

He died Jan. 4, 2015, at his home of natural causes.

A native of Hopkinsville, he was born Sept. 13, 1916, the son of the late Guy and Kate Wallace Starling.

He was retired as a salesman from Bass & Co. and Nelson Wholesale Kitchens. He was a World War II Marine Corps veteran and a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Starling; sons, Wallace (Elise Todd) Starling Jr., John (Barbara Brannon) Starling and Philip (Cindy McHale) Starling, all of Hopkinsville; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was buried in January 2015 at Riverside Cemetery, Hopkinsville, Christian Co., KY, Find A Grave Memorial# 145402667.

Wilcox (B.A. 1821) in Columbus, Ohio; wholesale merchant in New York; owned a cotton plantation in Arkansas; Major and Assistant Adjutant General on the staff of Major General Crittenden in Civil War; son of William and Mary (McDowell) Starling, of Mercer County, Ky.

Studied law in Cincinnati with firm of King, Thomson & Longworth, but had to leave Cincinnati on account of his health, went to Sunnyside, Ark., and engaged in business as a cotton planter until 1883; then moved to Greenville, Miss., was admitted to the bar, and practiced law until 1908, at first as member of firm of Campbell & Starling and from 1902 independently, gave up the law in 1908 on account of deafness and moved to Alberta, where he was engaged in farming on his own property, "Old Glory," during the rest of his life; secretary of Greenville School Board 1883-1908; treasurer of Church of the Disciples (Campbellites), Greenville, 1905-08; member of Church of the Disciples at Erskine, Alberta, at time of death.

Married October 15, 1878, at Lake Port Plantation, Ark., Annie, daughter of Lycurgus Leonidas and Lydia (Taylor)Johnson.

Children: Lydia Taylor (died in childhood); William (died in 1921); Cave, who attended Johnson Bible College two years (1899-1901); Antoinette, who attended University of Missouri 1901-03 and married Lee E. Lakin (B.A. Transylvania 1905, M A. 1906); Mary Cable (died in 1904); Charles Hensley; Benjamin Taylor; Lyne (died in 1920); and Linn. Mrs. Starling died April 17, 1913.

Death followed an operation for removal of stone from the bladder and occurred at the hospital in Medicine Hat.

Survived by one daughter, four sons, ten grandchildren, and a sister, Miss Laura P. Starling, of Frankfort, Ky.

He was buried on 7 October 1929 at Omega Cemetery, Gadsby, Wainright Census Division, Alberta, Canada, Findagrave #121742898.


Note: Charles had a son, William, who was accused of embezzling from a bank. William was married but had no children. In 1921, he committed suicide. He is buried in Greenville, Mississippi. His father, Charles, paid the bank the missing amount and subsequently moved his family to Canada. That's how a branch of the Starlings got to Canada.
