Wilbert “Bill” E. Spengler

WILTON, Iowa – Wilbert “Bill” E. Spengler, 81, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at his home.

Mr. Spengler was born June 9, 1929 in Davenport, the son of Wilber and Noalma Nelson Spengler. He married Shirley J. Moubry Doyle March 26, 1955, in Muscatine.

He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of the Durant American Legion Post No. 430 and the NRA.

He collected guns and enjoyed restoring and collecting antique autos. He loved animals, especially his cats Maggie and Molly.

He worked at Farmer’s Grain and Lumber, in Sunbury, while owning and operating Bill’s Tavern in Sunbury.

He later worked as a welder at Durant Fabricating and Wendling Quarries.

Inurnment will be held at a later date at the Oakdale Cemetery, Wilton.

Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Durant American Legion.

Memorials may7 be made to the Durant American Legion in his memory.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Shirley, of Wilton; his daughter, Lynn Snyder and husband, Mark, and their son, Joshua, of West Branch; his sons, Brett Spengler of Durant, and Scott “Boze” Spengler and wife, Deb, and their children, Kiley and Kale Spengler, of Durant; his sisters, Barb Damm and husband, Neal, of Davenport; and Carol Jilovec and husband, Don, of Mechanicsville.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Richard Spengler.

He was buried in December 2010 at Oakdale Cemetery, Wilton, Muscatine Co., IA, Findagrave #91971743.

     William Spengler was born on 10 November 1858 at Strasburg, Shendandoah Co., VA. He was the son of Peter Anthony Spengler and Amanda Shipe. William Spengler died on 24 July 1888 at Strasburg, Shendandoah Co., VA, at age 29.

     Ethel Willard Sperry was born on 23 March 1861 at Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA. Leaves Bulk of Large Estate to Her Immediate Relatives.

The will of the late Caroline E. Sperry, who left an estate valued at about $200,000, Inherited by her at the death of her husband, Simon W. Sperry. the pioneer flour manufacturer, was filed for probate yesterday. Ethel W. Crocker and George B. Sperry, children, and William H. Crocker, son-in-law of the deceased, are named as , executrix and executors of the testament. ' To George B. Sperry the testatrix devised one-half of the lots held by her in the Sperrjr Addition of Stockton, all of the lands held by her in Fresno and her shares in the Farmers' and Merchants' Bank of Stockton. To Georgea M. Sperry, wife of George B. Sperry, and Ethel W. Crocker is devised 400 shares in the Sperry Flour Company, in trust for the benefit ol Georgea M. Sperry during her lifetime, at the termination of which the shares are' to be divided among her children. To Elizabeth G., daughter of George B. Sperry, the four children of James I Sperry, and Austin TV. Sperry, a grand son, is left 100 shares each in the Sperry Flour Company: to Ethel W.. wife of William H. Crocker, five bonds of the West Side Flume and Lumber Company, and to her four children $1500 each. In. trust for the benefit. of Elizabeth Poniatowski, a daughter, wife of Prince Poniatowski, is devised 920 shares in the Sperry Flour Company, the same to be divided among her children upon her death. To Princess Poniatowski is also devlsed one-half the lots held by the testatrix In the Sperry Addition of Stockton. Bequests of $500 each are made to St. John's Episcopal Protestant Church of Stockton and the Protestant Episcopal Church at Montecito. Berkshire ; is a son of Albert and Matilda (Vernon) Sperry; his father was, born in Knox Co., Ohio, in 1815 where he has always remained; his wife was daughter of Isaac Vernon ; she was born June 13, 1820, in Knox Co; Mr. Sperry, the subject of these notes, was born June 3, 1846, in his mother's native county, where he remained engaged in farming until 1874, when he merchandised at Bangs, same county; in 1875, he sold and came to his present farm of 100 acres. Mr. Sperry was married Oct. 25, 1870, to Armada Rees, daughter of Theophilus Rees, of Licking Co; she was born Sept. 11, 1850 ; this wedding was celebrated by Rev. C. N. Harford, of the Baptist denomination; they have two children by this union-Rees, born July 13, 1872 ; Gracie A., June 15, 1876 ; they are both members of the Baptist Church in Sunbury.

(probably), OH.² Rees Vernon Sperry died on 10 July 1964 at Newark, Licking Co., OH, at age 91.¹

     Virginia Elizabeth Sperry was born on 24 November 1909 at St. Louis, MO. She was the daughter of James Sperry and Frances Hahn. Virginia Elizabeth Sperry married Elmer Gordon Starr, son of Elmer Gordon Starr and Bessie Smith, on 23 November 1935 at Wright City, Warren Co., MO. Virginia Elizabeth Sperry died on 31 January 2001 at Cape Coral, Lee Co., FL, at age 91.

     Ethel N. Spicer was born on 6 November 1895 at Montgomery Co. (probably), OH.¹ She was the daughter of Oscar Z. Spicer and Rosa May Apple. Ethel N. Spicer married Herbert R. Dryden, son of Charles Wendel Dryden and Mary Eliza Brush, at Montgomery Co. (probably), OH.¹ Ethel N. Spicer died on 30 September 1979 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Dayton, Montgomery Co., OH, at age 83.

     Eva Ilene Spicer was born in 1923. She married James Porter Nutter, son of James B. Nutter and Mina T. Withem. Eva Ilene Spicer died in 1999.

     Henrietta C. Spicer was born on 5 November 1911 at Nashville, Davidson Co., TN.¹ She was the daughter of Henry Widney Spicer and Elizabeth Nichol.¹ Henrietta C. Spicer married Robert Thomas Creighton. Henrietta C. Spicer died on 3 July 1992 at Nashville, Davidson Co., TN, at age 80.

     Oscar Z. Spicer was born in July 1872 at Ohio.¹ He married Rosa May Apple on 25 May 1893 at Montgomery Co., OH. Oscar Z. Spicer died in 1938. He was buried in 1939 at Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery, Dayton, Montgomery Co., OH, Findagrave #137270778.
