Susie Emma Berry1
F, b. August 1896, d. 10 January 1990
Susie Emma Berry was born in August 1896 at Colo, Story Co., IA, per 1900 census. Much later, in May 1963, she used the Iowa "Delayed Certificate of Birth" system to create a birth record that shows 29 DEC 1893, adding almost 6 years to her age, and qualifying her for a Social Security retirement benefit. There are conflicting public records, some of which tend to support the earlier date, but many others such as the 1910 and 1920 censuses support 1896 or even later. Her obituary says 29 DEC 1892. I believe the 1900 census. DLB 2020.1 She was the daughter of Isaac M. Berry and Ellen Jane Smith.1 Susie Emma Berry married Worley Melvin Hardesty, son of Martin Theodore Hardesty and Catherine Isabella Stratton, on 15 July 1912 at Boone, Boone Co., IA, or possibly Story County, per delayed birth index record. Susie Emma Berry and Worley Melvin Hardesty were divorced before 18 June 1918; Susie remarried to Claude W. Young on 18 JUN 1918. Susie Emma Berry married Claude William Young on 18 June 1918 at Vinton, Benton Co., IA, Claude remarried to Sarah Cooper at Anamosa in 1930. Susie Emma Berry and Claude William Young were divorced before January 1920; Susie was living with her parents as of the 1920 census, marital status "D". Susie Emma Berry married Leomarolo Rioz on 9 February 1920 at Polk Co., IA. Susie Emma Berry lived on 27 December 1922 at the Iowa State Penitentiary, Anamosa, Jones Co., IA, admitted, age 25, height 5' 6", weight 160, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, sentenced to 5 years for prostitution, Story County, Judge H. E. Fry. She married Jesse T. Stillwell on 19 March 1926 at Des Moines, Polk Co., IA, the marriage license application contains multiple errors, including her age which lost 6 years, and that this was her first marriage, instead of her fourth.
Susie Emma Berry married Lawrence Lyons. Susie Emma Berry died on 10 January 1990 at Nevada, Story Co., IA, at age 93

SUSIE LYONS
Susie Lyons, 96, died of heart failure Tuesday, Jan. 10, at the Rolling Green Village Care Center, Nevada. Funeral services are Friday, Jan. 13, at 10:30 a.m., at the Cooper-Ryan Funeral Home, with the Rev. Brad Braley officiating. Burial will be in the Nevada Cemetery.
Susie Berry was born Dec. 29, 1892, to Isaac and Ellen (Smith) Berry. She was a homemaker and also was employed outside the home cleaning other homes. She lived her lifetime in Nevada and attended the Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two children, Carolyn McDorman of Salem and Worley Hardesty; and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence in 1959, two brothers; and two sisters.
Visitation is Thursday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the the funeral home.
-------------------------------------------
Note: If Carolyn (Brown) (Gilson) McDorman (1915 - 1998) was in fact the biological daughter of Susie Berry, then she must have been given up as an infant for adoption by Howard and Lidde (Mills) Brown. She was listed as the Brown's daughter on the 1920 census, and listed their names as her parents on her marriage record.
Based on Susie's history with the gentlemen, the identity of Carolyn's biological father is not at all obvious -- he could have been Worley Hardesty or someone else.
Moreover, Carolyn's birth date of 14 JAN 1915 is in conflict with Worley M. Hardesty Jr.'s birth date of 21 NOV 1915, regarding the possibility that they both had the same mother. Unless there was an error in entering one of these dates into the SS records, they both cannot have been Susie Berry's children.
DLB 2020.
She was buried in January 1990 at Nevada Municipal Cemetery, Nevada, Story Co., IA, Findagrave #122029874.
