Note: Moses Starr, son of James and Rachel Laybourne Starr, was born 21 Dec 1720 in London Grove Twp. Chester Co., PA. He removed at the age of eleven with his parents in 1731 to Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. He lived on the Starr farm in the Manavon tract, became a miller, and operated a mill with his brother James Starr but sold the business in 1748 to Samuel Jones and Jacob Hilderbrand.
The Quaker records show that Moses and his brother Samuel were admonished for "disunity" ----- perhaps not attending church ---- and on September 20, 1754, they were read out of Quaker Meeting. They became Methodists. Moses and his first wife had difficulties and parted. Quaker records in Chester Co., PA tell of his first marriage and difficulties.
Moses Starr was married first in a Quaker Meeting in Chester Co. to Sarah Davis, born in 1718. Some sources say they were married in 1745 at East Town, PA. Supposedly there are Quaker records of this first marriage and of a disagreement between Moses Starr, his wife and her father. The marriage must have been dissolved. Later there are Quaker records showing Moses and a brother were dismissed in 1754 and by 1755 Moses was no longer a member of the Quaker Meeting. This must have been when he went to New Jersey and married his second wife, Margaret Quattelbaum, probably around 1755/56.
It is not certain where in New Jersey Moses and Margaret lived. Some think he lived in Somerset Co., however, there was a Moses Starr on a list of travern owners in Hunterdon Co., N.J. It is believed that most of their children were probably born in Bridgewater Twp., Somerset Co., Cumberland Co., or Hunterdon Co., N.J.
Moses Starr then moved to central Pennsylvania near Honey Grove and a gap in the Tuscorora Mountains (Juniata County), where he bought land. There are a few tax records for Moses Starr. They sold their land in 1794. Their son John Starr, then living in Hampshire Co., Virginia (now West Virginia.) was a witness to the deed. It is not known what happened to Moses and Margaret Starr. They probably went to Hampshire County to live as most of their children had moved there.
Moses and Margaret Quattelbaum Starr were the parents of nine children.
Moses Starr was born on 21 December 1720 at London Grove Twp., Chester Co., PA. He was the son of James Starr and Rachel June Laybourne. Moses Starr married Sarah Davis on 26 April 1745 at Radnor Meeting, Chester Co., PA. Moses Starr was Quaker, until he and his brother James were "read out" of Quaker Meeting in 1754. He married Anna Margarethe Quattelbaum, daughter of Peter Quattelbaum and Anna Maria Barbara Von Der Hutte, in 1755 at New Jersey (probably). Moses Starr died after 1794 at Hampshire Co. (probably), VA (now WV).

Note: Moses Starr and his wife, Deborah (King) Starr, from Old Castle, County Meath, Ireland, took up land in the Maiden Creek Valley about 1730 or 1731. The Indian name of the stream was Ontelaunee, meaning "The little maid of the big mother", the Schuylkill river being the big mother. The English settlers translated it into Maiden Creek. Maiden Creek is 10 mile north of Reading, Pennsylvania.
Moses and Deborah Starr settled along this stream about three miles up stream from where it flows into the river. They were the first white settlers in this section of Berks county. They were soon followed by Francis Parvin who settled three miles to the south of them at what is now Berkley and by Jacob Lightfoot who settled just across the Maiden Creek from them. These were also followed by a number of other families, all English speaking Friends, among them the Huttons, Willits, Wilys, Pearsons, Penroses, Wrights, and Lees.
Moses Starr was the first and for many years the only representative of Berks County in the Provincial Assembly. Moses and Deborah Starr built their house on the west bank of the Maiden Creek and there they raised a large family.
Moses and Deborah Starr's son John, stayed on the home farm and this farm (since called Starr Farm) continued in the hands of his descendants until it was taken over by the city of Reading in 1927 for the new water project.
Now flooded into a lake, the Quaker meeting house and grave yard were moved about 1 mile up the road, with the school house.
Moses and Deborah sailed to America in 1717, settling first at New Garden, Chester County.
Moses and Deborah arrived at Maiden Creek in June 29, 1732 as Members of the Society of Friends.
Issac Starr, Moses' brother, followed to Maiden Creek.
Before a regular meeting house was established at Maiden Creek in 1735, the early Friends met in the home of Mose Starr for their first gatherings.
Moses Starr was called upon to perform in the Preparative Meeting held Feb 24, 1733. Moses and Deborah were very active in the affairs of the business meetings. Frequently they were appointed as representatives to attend the Quarterly Meetings in Philadelphia.
Moses and Deborah were still living in the year 1766, and there is no known record of their deaths.
No will was filed for probate. Birthdate: "8mo, 27, 1692" in Old Style (Quaker) notation

Note: Reverend Moses Starr relocated with his family in 1839 to Iowa. He owned land in the Northwest part of of Section 35, Lynn Grove Township, Jasper Co., Iowa, April 24, 1848, when this claim was made. Born in Hampshire County, Virginia (now WV) in 1787, but moved to Ohio when quite young. There he engaged in mercantile pursuits. In 1839 they moved to Iowa. In 1853 the Starr family started the long and perilous journey across the plains. Ox and horse teams furnished the motive power. When they reached Dales, Oregon, Moses was taken ill and soon after reaching Clackamas he died. Saddened and bereaved though she was, Elizabeth took his place at the head of the little band and lead them to their destination in Benton County, Oregon. There she took up a Donation land claim of 160 acres. She improved her land and made a home. Her ability as a physician was of unusual order and many a sick room was brightened by her presence.
