Rev. Joel Swartz1
M, b. 18 August 1827, d. 16 March 1914
Note: [Joel Swartz]....."studied at Woodstock Academy [Virginia] and [on a particular occasion] had to escape from a second floor room when the building caught fire. Later he went to Morgantown, W. Va., and he graduated from Capitol University, Columbus, Ohio" [in 1854] (Swartz, Philip Allen, 1955, The Swartz Family of the Shenandoah Valley, Va., Poughkeepsie, p. 18). He was ordained as a Lutheran minister at a meeting of the English branch of the Tennessee Synod, McGaheysville, VA [in 1855] (Swartz, Joel, 1904, A Short History of a Long Life, Poughkeepsie, p. 145). "The first church that gave him a real opportunity was in Circleville, Ohio. There he gained a reputation for liberal outlook by not observing the exclusiveness of that branch of the Lutheran Church. Shortly after he was barred from his pulpit by his ministerial brothers 'for foresaking the fellowship of his bretheran and consorting with sectarian heretics.' He was charged with opening his pulpit to ministers who were not of the same order. He held prayer meetings at which he had persuaded some of his unordained bretheran to pray. The local church voted to sustain their pastor, to withdraw from that ecclesiastical connection and to proceed in the construction of a new church. [He was convicted of heresy by his synod, but subsequently this trial was censured by the church]. About this time a call came from a Lutheran Church in Baltimore, Md. During the years of the Civil War this city was divided in its sympathies. In 1865-66 he was a Professor of Homiletics and Hermeneutics at Wittenberg Lutheran Theological Seminary, Springfield, Ohio. He was chairman of the committee that prepared the General Synods's Book of Worship. He was awarded a D.D. by Wittenberg College in 1867. ..... He was in Cincinnati for l866-67, in Carlisle from 1867-71, in Williamsport from 1871-74 and Philadelphia in 1874-75. Then came his call to probably his largest and most influential pastorate, Zion Lutheran Church in Harrisburg, Pa. He served this church from 1875-81.....and had up to a thousand people in his congregation" (Swartz, Philip Allen, 1955, op. cit., p. 18).
He was pastor at Gettysburg, PA, 1881-94 (Lutheran); Steubanville, OH, 1894-96 (Congregational); Devon, PA, 1896-07 (Presbyterian); Maplewood, MO, 1907-10
(Congregational); and Sanford, FL, 1910-13
(Congregational).
He dedicated the unveiling of a statue of Martin Luther in Philadelphia on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of his birth, May 21, 1884, by reciting his Lyra Lutherana.
He wrote two works of poetry, Dreamings of a Waking Heart (1877), 130 pp. and Poems (1901), 237 pp., his autobiography, A Short History of a Long Life (1904), 224 pp. and a number of smaller works and pamphlets.2

Note: "Eliza Good, wife of William Snarr, was a daughter of Sarah Good, according to the marriage bond, though an obituary in Missouri said that her maiden name was Swartz. .....Sarah Good, a single woman, gave birth to a female bastard child, Nov. 1816 and charged John Swartz, a son of Martin Swartz as the father. The Overseer of the Poor hauled Swartz in to Court and he was made to pay for the support of the child. One account of Eliza's birth said Nov. 9, 1814 and another 9 Oct. 1817 (figured from age of death). But it would appear from this document that indeed she is the child born in 1816 (supported by census records too)"
