Obituary -- (Findagrave.com):
Business and civic leader John T. Sutton passed away on November 19, 2005 at the age of 88.
John was born to Leila and Albert Sutton in Indianapolis on March 11, 1917.
He graduated from Shortridge High School in 1934 and received of Bachelor of Arts degree from Wabash College in 1938. John served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Medical Administrative Corps and was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain. After the war John opened his first retail appliance store, Sutton Sales, on the corner of 38th and Broadway. After 15 years of operating his original store plus two others, it became clear to John that department and larger specialty stores were the wave of the future for selling appliances, so he decided to give back to the community that he loved so much and went into politics. In 1963 he was elected Marion County Auditor, a post he held until 1969. With the help of his loyal and highly competent staff, he was able to automate the office and start the computer era for local government. From 1969-1975 John served as Vice President of Governmental Affairs and Public Relations for American Fletcher National Bank. After a short stint as Public Relations Consultant for the Indiana Pacers, John went back into politics and was elected Marion County Treasurer in 1977. He ended his working career as Vice President of Governmental and Community Affairs for Merchants National Bank, retiring in 1985. During his long and distinguished working career, John was a very active and involved member of several civic and service organizations. He held an office or was on the Board of Directors for the Downtown Kiwanis Club, Service Club, Indianapolis Press Club, Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, Indianapolis Jaycees, Indianapolis Public Relation Society, Mayflower Classic Pro-Am, American Cancer Society, Indianapolis Bicentennial Commission, Marion County Sheriff's Merit Board, Shortridge High School Alumni Association, USO Council of Indianapolis, Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee, Greater Indianapolis Republican Finance Committee, Gyro Club, Meridian Hills Country Club and the Salvation Army. John also won numerous awards for his civic and community involvement including the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal from the Department of the Army, Man of the Year Award from both the Marion County American Cancer Society and Indianapolis Press Club, Kiwanis Distinguished President Award and was named a Sagamore of the Wabash under 4 different Indiana Governors.
John was married to his wife, Mary Lou for 58 years before her death in 2002. He has three children, Jan, Dave (Sandy) and Steve (Suzi), four grandchildren, Jeff (Carol), Tim, Tom and Amy and two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Kylie. They will all miss "Pop" very much.
The family would like to thank the very professional and caring staffs of Sunrise of Carmel and Asera Care for taking such wonderful care of John for the last 3 years. We invite all of John's friends to come say good-bye on Tuesday, November 29 at the Shirley Brothers Fishers-Castleton Chapel, 9900 Allisonville Road from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon with services immediately following.
