Philip Swartz was born on 22 January 1788 at Saumsville, Shenandoah Co., VA.1,2 He was the son of Johannes Swartz and Susannah Lehman.
Note: ".....Philip Swartz was physically strong, erect, and about six feet tall. He had a finely shaped head, light hair and blue eyes. His face was kindly in expression, but marked with individual courage. He was more than ordinarily endowed with powers of understanding and much practical wisdom. He never failed from principle, to be just and honorable. He talked with judgment and care. He was not particularly given to words of appreciation or compliment, but when he made friends he held them with hooks of steel. 'He was jealous of the honor of his neighbors,' who loved and trusted him. His Church and his minister and the ordinances of religion and the assemblies of the people for worship, were very dear to him." Swartz, Joel, 1904, A Short History of a Long Life, Poughkeepsie, p. 8.
On a deed possessed in 1968 by Mrs. Eldred Helsley (now deceased) Philip Swartz sold his property in Cottontown, 199 1/2 acres, to William C. Meadley on March 1, 1863. Philip Swartz moved to McGaheysville, VA just prior to the Civil War. Upon his return to Cottontown he lived with his daughter's, Rebecca Ann Miller, family until his death. The Miller house was razed about 1976. Helsley sold his property to H & H Farms in 1977. Property containing the Swartz cemetery was purchased by Frank Brumback before 1981.
Philip Swartz married Regina Funkhouser, daughter of Abraham Funkhouser, on 17 May 1816 at Mt. Olive, Shenandoah Co., VA. Philip Swartz died on 18 February 1867 at Cottontown, Shenandoah Co., VA, at age 79.1
