Norman was born March 1, 1934, near O’Keene, OK, to John and Myrtle Thiessen. From O’Keene, their family moved to Missouri where his father got hailed out three years in a row, which forced them to move to Iowa in 1942. He attended country school near Van Horne through 5th grade and then went to Van Horne High School, graduating in 1954.
He then joined the U.S. Air Force where he was in aircraft control. The last two years of the four years he was sent to Okinawa and to the lower islands of Japan.
On June 20, 1964, he was united in marriage to Margaret Buelow at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Van Horne. Their lives together were blessed with the birth of two daughters, Kristi and Carol.
He was confirmed into the Lutheran faith in 1966 at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Van Horne.
Norman was employed at Iowa Electric for 29 years, retiring in 1996. The last 23 years were spent at the DAEC Nuclear Plant, Palo.
He and his wife farmed actively near Atkins for many years. He was a very talented carpenter and woodworker, making furniture for themselves and his two daughters.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret, and his daughters, Kristi (Curtis) Rottman of Atkins, and Carol (Randy) Woodley, of Atkins. Grandchildren, Rachel and Hannah Woodley and Nathan Rottman. Also surviving are his brothers, Bill (Jan) Thiessen and Bruce (Charla) Thiessen, his sisters, Wanda (Richard) Mauck, Margaret (George) Fetter and Freda (Steph) Hurlsburt, along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Emma and Martha; and one brother, Francis.
He was a member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, Atkins.
Norman was a loving husband, father and grandfather who greatly enjoyed his grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Bell Tower project in care of St. Stephen’s Church, Atkins.

She was a homemaker and was a member of the Johnson Baptist Church. Rachel was married to Charley STARR. He preceded her in death on June 22, 1999. Although she did not have any children of her own, Rachel had several nieces and nephews that she loved very much and took care of.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; six brothers, Scott, Joe, Ralph, Redwing, William and Adam THIRSTY and one sister, Alice THIRSTY.
Rachel is survived by three sisters, Edna, Rose and Ella Mae; and one step-son Arthur, all of Okla.

Margaret "Margot" (Thom) Lovejoy age 97 died peacefully on December 3, 2014. She was born in Antigo, WI on May 4, 1917, the eldest child of Katharine (Bissell), and Walter Thom. Winfield Thom was born in Beloit, Rock County, Wisconsin on October 17, 1885, the son of Henry Cassius and Julia Helen (Scott) Thom, esteemed and influential residents of Madison, WI. Abraham Fike Thomas, whose death was mentioned in our last issue, died Wednesday, March 27, 1912, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Francena Stearns, near Mt. Etna, at about 8 o'clock. He passed away quite suddenly from hemorrhage of the brain. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, at the Dunkard church, conducted by Rev. S. Bucklew, and the body was laid to rest in the Dunkard cemetery. Uncle Abe, as he was familiarly, known, was born In Brandouville, West Virginia, October 15, 1830 to Abraham Michael Thomas and Elizabeth Fike. He grew to manhood in the place of his birth and was there married to Miss Louisa Thomas on the 7th of February, 1855. Alter residing in the old home about five years Mr. and Mrs. Thomas came to Iowa, locating near Mt. Etna. May I8, I860, Mrs. Thomas died. Three children were born to this union, one son who died, and two daughters, Mrs. Francena Stearns and Mrs. Isabel Johnston, both of the vicinity of Mt. Etna. February 21, 1861, Mr. Thomas was united in
marriage with Miss Elizabeth Fees, who passed from this life in 1880. Some three years later, April 9, 1883, Mr. Thomas was again married, the bride being Miss Elizabeth Chaney. To this union, three children were born of whom Mrs. Louisa Beckwith and Jacob Thomas, residing near Mt. Etna survive their parents. The wife and mother died February 14, 1888. Being one of the pioneers of this county Mr Thomas had seen many changes since he located here. He had succeeded in getting a goodly share of this world's goods and at the time of his death he owned about 400 acres of land in Adams county. Mr. Thomas was the first grocer in Mt. Etna, starting and conducting a store there and hauling his goods from Des Moines. He was owner of the mill in Mt. Etna for a time. Mr. Thomas was a gentleman, who made friends with all with whom he came in contact and he was ever ready to lend assistance when needed. He will be missed by many friends.
