Catherine Ann Blessing
F, b. 8 March 1827, d. 30 October 1898
Catherine Ann Blessing was born on 8 March 1827 at Dauphin Co., PA. She married Simon D. Kohl on 27 May 1851. Catherine Ann Blessing died on 30 October 1898 at Lisbon, Linn Co., IA, at age 71 Obituary (findagrave.com):
Catherine Ann Blessing was born in Dauphin County, Pa., March 8th, 1827. She was united in marriage with Mr. Joseph Keller in the year 1845, to them were born two children who died in infancy. She, with her husband, joined a large party of emigrants to Iowa, which mostly consisted of relatives, neighbors and church people, who embarked on the illfated steamer, "Belle of the West", owned by Rev. Mr. Brown, a United Brethren minister of Cincinnati. To this party belonged many families of wealth and influence, who afterwards were among the founders of Lisbon. The passage was prosperous and pleasant, till reaching a point some sixty miles below Cincinnati and near Warsaw, Ky., where the steamer was burned and her husband with fourteen others perished in this awful calamity, and Mrs. Keller narrowly escaped the same fate, being rescued from the water with two of her sisters, by Henry Guyer late of Polo, Ill. In this misfortune she lost all of her earthly effects, but she continued her journey till she reached Iowa where she lived the remainder of her life. On May 27th, 1851, she was married to Mr. Simon Kohl, with whom she lived over forty-seven years. In this marriage there were born to them eight children, five of whom survive her, Mrs. Elizabeth Walmer, Mrs. Barbara Andre, Mrs. Lavina Koch, and Messrs Michael and Albert Kohl and three of her children, Mrs. Bohr, Mrs. Moffit and Henry preceded her to that bourn from whence no traveler returns.
She has twenty-seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Mrs. Kohl was converted and joined the United Brethren church when she was only fifteen years old, and continued in this church a faithful and consistent member till death. Her christian life was marked with earnestness and largeness of heart. She always manifested a great anxiety for the salvation of the unsaved, and deep interest in prayer-meetings, and all the means of grace, indeed her seat in the sanctuary was never vacant without cause. She was always ready to visit the sick and minister to the wants of the needy, and her home was the place where the weary itinerant was refreshed and rested.
In August, 1897, just returning from church, she was stricken with paralysis, from which she never recovered, having remained for about fourteen months a helpless invalid, but she was meek and patient in spirit, being thankful for all the attention given her from those who cared for her. She always tried to make home pleasant to all and was greatly concerned for her devoted husband in his decline and feebleness.
On Sunday morning, October 30th, she passed away over the mystic river of Jordan, without a struggle, folding her hands over her finished work. She sleeps with Jesus, hopefully waiting the resurrection of the just. Aged 71 years, 7 months and 22 days. Three brothers and three sisters survive her. The funeral service was held in the United Brethren church, Tuesday forenoon, conducted by Dr. I. K. Stratton. The funeral was largely attended and interment took place in the Lisbon Cemetery.
