Petroleum leader from Utica dead at 80
Cary Wagner, a leader in the petroleum industry and former resident of Utica, died Friday morning in his home at Wooster.
Wagner, 80, was senior vice president of General Analine and Film Corp. and director of General Dyestuffs Corp. until named president of Synthetic and Organic Chemical Manufacturers' Association. His positions also included assistant general manager of Lion Oil and Refinery Co. and chief chemist for the former Pure Oil and Refinery Co. of Newark, and he served with the Petroleum Administration for War during World War II.
In 1954, he was appointed chairman of the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund Advisory Board. He was a member of the American Chemical Society, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Institute of Chemists, American Association for the Advancement of Science and Ohio Academy of Science.
Wagner was valedictorian of the class of 1915 at College of Wooster, where he earned membership in the honorary society of Phi Beta Kappa. A former chairman of Wooster's board of trustees, he and his wife, Elizabeth Sidwell Wagner, established academic funds and annual academic prizes for top students in mathematics and chemistry, donating over $750,000 to the college.
Wagner held 50 U.S. and foreign patents in the petroleum industry and received the Modern Pioneer Award in 1940. After his graduate work at Purdue University, he was awarded honorary doctorates of science from College in Wooster in 1945 and Marietta College in 1961. He taught German classes at College of Wooster.
He was born Jan. 3, 1894, in Utica to Daniel and Ella (Blue) Wagner, and is survived by his wife.
Private graveside services will be held at Wooster Cemetery. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday and 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mackey Hall, Westminster Church House, Wooster. there are no calling hours.

Services for Winifred W. Kern, 74, of Utica, formerly of the Homer area, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Homer Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Ross Karnes officiating. Burial will be in Homer Cemetery.
Mrs. Kern died Sunday evening in West Allis (Wis.) Memorial Hospital. She was born May 28, 1914, in Homer, to the late Fred and Bertha (Wright) Wagner.
A retired employee of Denison University, she was a member of Homer Presbyterian Church, Homer Presbyterian Ladies Aid Society, Homer Community Garden Club and Alpha Pi Sigma sorority.
Surviving are: one daughter, Mrs. Bernard (Beth) Rappel of West Allis, Wis; one brother, Edgar Wagner of Sheboygan (sic), Mich; three sisters, Mrs. Marian Evans of Milford, Ohio, Mrs. Margaret Thomas of Mentor, Ohio, and Mrs. Lois Kerr of Waco, Texas, and four grandsons.
