COLUMBIANA - Virginia Mae "Jinny" Ellis, age 91, of Columbiana, passed away Monday, May 4, 2009, at Parkside Health Care.
She was born July 28, 1917, in Columbiana, Ohio, daughter of the late Jonathan and Orca (Houlette) Vollnogle.
Jinny was a member of Jerusalem Lutheran Church in Columbiana and also at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bradenton, Fla. Jinny belonged to the American Legion Post 290 Auxiliary.
Jinny and her husband, John, lived in Palmetto, Fla., from 1980-2001. She loved to fish and play cards.
Survivors include her children, James (Dawn) Ellis and JoAnn Kale, both of Columbiana; grandchildren, Johnny Kale of Columbiana, Tony (Heidi) Ellis of Perrysburg, Tracey Ellis of Salem, and stepgranddaughter, Mrs. Gerald (Dawn Marie) Timmann of Columbiana; also survived by great-grandchildren, Danielle Ellis of Columbiana, Jimmy Ellis of Perrysburg, David Barker of Bucyrus, Rebecca Barker of Columbiana; nieces, Betty Blackburn of California, Amanda Hetric of Connecticut, and nephew ,Deane (Suzanne) Hetric of Connecticut.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Isaac Ellis, whom she married on Aug. 24, 1940; also preceded by her sisters, Ruth Hetric and Harriett Vollnogle; her son-in-law, Richard Kale, and her niece, Patty Held.
Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be officiated by the Rev. W. David H. Conrad, 11 a.m. Thursday, May 14, 2009, at the Jerusalem Lutheran Church. Final resting place will be Columbiana Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home.

NILES - Edward J. Voogd, 94, of Lewis Drive, Niles, Michigan, died following a brief illness at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 2, 2007, in his home. Mr. Voogd was born on October 13, 1912, in Muskegon, Michigan, to Joseph and Emma (Kerr) Voogd. He had lived in Niles since 1950, coming from Muskegon. He was employed for many years in sales and design at the former Martin Brothers Contractors, Benton Harbor, Michigan. Edward was a member and former usher at Saint Paul's Lutheran Church in Niles. A veteran of World War II, he served in the United States Army, participating in campaigns in Berlin, the Battle of the Bulge and Omaha Beach. On October 8, 1944, he was wounded in Germany near the Belgium border but did not receive the Purple Heart. Through the efforts of his family, he received this honor 55 years later at a family ceremony on Christmas Eve. He loved golf and was an avid player. He enjoyed fly fishing, and learned how to tie flies. A love of music lead him to play the violin and also to become a vocalist on the Christian radio station. One time Ed and another Niles resident sang on the Amos and Andy radio program. An affectionate man by nature, Ed loved to "kiss in the kitchen." In December 1940, in Muskegon, he married the former Mary Alyce Leffering, who preceded him in death. Edward later married on September 11, 1982, in Niles, the former Hertha (Koehn) Sigwold, who survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Judy (Ron) Phillips of Niles and Cathy (Win) Lindner of South Bend; a son, James (Anchalee) Voogd of Oak Leaf, Texas; two stepdaughters, Susie (Bob) Hamrick of South Bend and Sonja Stanton of Mishawaka; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Cornelia Wendt of Yalaha, Florida, and Francine Brown of Norton Shores, Michigan. A funeral service for Edward J. Voogd will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 6, 2007, in Saint Paul's Lutheran Church in Niles, with Rev. Carl W. Bassett officiating. Committal services will follow at the graveside in Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles, and will conclude with full military honors by American Legion Post #26, Niles. The family will receive relatives and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the Halbritter Funeral Home. Contributions in memory of Edward J. Voogd may be made to Saint Paul's Lutheran Church.

Medora -- Donald W. Voorhees, 82, a prominent grain and stock dealer of near Medora, was pronounced dead Friday at 10:45 a.m. at Carlinville Area Hospital following an apparent heart attack at his home.
A son of the late George Voorhees, a former Chicago University professor, he was born September 8, 1884 in Cook County.
Mr. Voorhees had lived in the Medora area for 60 years and prior to that had taught school in Macoupin County.
He was married in 1905 to the former Mary Kitzmiller, and following her death he was married to the former Mrs. Helen Ames, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, George R. Voorhees, Pittsburgh, Pa., a step-daughter, Mrs. Richard Barnett, East St. Louis and a step-son, Navy Commander Fred H. Ames, New Bedford, Mass., two sisters, Mrs. John Skinner, Hamilton, and Mrs. Sherman Kell, Medora; two brothers, Lawrence E., Washington, DC., and Dr. Vandever Voorhees, Los Altos, Calif. There are 11 grandchildren.
Members of Lodge 152, AF & AM of which he was a member will officiate at memorial services Sunday at 8 p.m. at Warner Funeral Home, Medora.
Funeral services will be Monday at 1 p.m. in Warner Funeral home followed by burial in Kemper Cemetery.
Visitation at the Funeral home will be after 2 p.m. Sunday.

Voorhees
Medora -- Donald W. Voorhees, 82, a prominent grain and stock dealer of near Medora, was pronounced dead Friday at 10:45 a.m. at Carlinville Area Hospital following an apparent heart attack at his home.
A son of the late George Voorhees, a former Chicago University professor, he was born September 8, 1884 in Cook County.
Mr. Voorhees had lived in the Medora area for 60 years and prior to that had taught school in Macoupin County.
He was married in 1905 to the former Mary Kitzmiller, and following her death he was married to the former Mrs. Helen Ames, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, George R. Voorhees, Pittsburgh, Pa., a step-daughter, Mrs. Richard Barnett, East St. Louis and a step-son, Navy Commander Fred H. Ames, New Bedford, Mass., two sisters, Mrs. John Skinner, Hamilton, and Mrs. Sherman Kell, Medora; two brothers, Lawrence E., Washington, DC., and Dr. Vandever Voorhees, Los Altos, Calif. There are 11 grandchildren.
Members of Lodge 152, AF & AM of which he was a member will officiate at memorial services Sunday at 8 p.m. at Warner Funeral Home, Medora.
Funeral services will be Monday at 1 p.m. in Warner Funeral home followed by burial in Kemper Cemetery.
Visitation at the Funeral home will be after 2 p.m. Sunday.

George R. Voorhees was born on 13 December 1919 at Macoupin Co. (probably), IL.1 He was the son of Donald W. Voorhees and Mary Electa Kitzmiller. George R. Voorhees lived in 1942 at Mahoning Co., OH, per WW II enlistment record. He began military service on 15 January 1942 at Ft. Hayes, Columbus, Franklin Co., OH, Enlisted, U.S. military. He married Phyllis L. Matthews, daughter of John Cisero Matthews Jr. and Agrippina Felicitas Hemingway, on 21 December 1947. George R. Voorhees lived in 1966 at Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., PA. He died on 13 November 2011 at age 91. He was buried in November 2011 at Weimar Masonic Cemetery, Weimar, Colorado Co., TX, Find A Grave Memorial# 102561904.
