James Augustine Wendell was also known as Jay Guss All known public documents, with the exception of the 1870 census, and including his death certificate name him Jay Guss or Gus. His real name was provided by living descendants.
Note:
The biological father of Mariah Ridgway's son James Augustine Wendell was in all likelihood John, son of William D. and Effie (DeLong) Wendell, born 1833 in Ohio, died 1898 at Logan County, Illinois. Here are the documented facts available today:
- Mariah Ridgway married a John "Windall" on 21 MAR 1861 in Pike County, Ohio, per marriage record archives in the Pike County Probate Court.
- Mariah gave birth to James Augustine "Jay Gus" Wendell in July, 1861, per the 1900 census. His death certificate shows his age as 76 years, as of 39 NOV 1937.
- Mariah remarried, using her maiden name, and with her father's written approval, to Henry Clay Cave on 7 APR 1864 in Ross County, Ohio, per the Ross County Intention to Marry and marriage record.
- Mariah and Henry Cave were living in Monticello Twp., Jones County, Iowa as of the 1870 census, whereas James A. Wendell was living with her parents in Pike County, Ohio. By the 1880 census, "Gus" had relocated to be very close to his mother's residence and is found listed as "Gust", a farm laborer in a farming family one township northwest of Monticello Twp., in Milo Twp., Delaware County, Iowa. The Mariah and Henry Cave family had relocated within the year prior to the 1880 census to Plum Creek Twp., Boone County, Nebraska as evidenced by the birth location of their youngest son, age 1, of Iowa.
- A Y-DNA 37-marker test of a male line Wendell descendant of Philip and Barbara (Swartz) Wendell of Guernsey County, Ohio (the parents of Daniel Wendell whose family lived in Huntington Twp. of Ross County and of William D. Wendell whose son John Wendell and a grandson John Wendell lived in Seal Twp. of Pike County in 1860), matched with high confidence the Y-DNA of a great-grandson of James Augustine "Gus" Wendell.

- James Augustine Wendell+ b. Jul 1861, d. 29 Nov 1937; This relationship is based on Y-DNA 37-marker test and a close match between a male Wendell, born 1954, a descendant of the Daniel Wendell/Rebecca Swartz family of Guernsey and Ross Counties, Ohio, and a living male line great-grandson of James Augustine "Jay Guss" Wendell, as well as a 21 MAR 1861 marriage record in Pike County, Ohio, of Mariah Ridgway to a John "Windall". John, born 1833, son of William D. Wendell and Effie DeLong, was the only unmarried John Wendell listed in the 1860 censuses of Pike and Ross Counties, Ohio. The circumstances of the 1861 marriage, with the birth of a son four months later, are fairly obvious. The reasons for the following separation are unknown (a divorce record was searched for and not found), but the known facts indicate that it was John Wendell (1833 - 1898) who was Mariah Ridgway's first husband and the father of Jay Guss Wendell. Obituary: JOHN HENRY WENDELL JR., 73, formerly of Fort Worth, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, transitioned peacefully Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, surrounded in love by his family.
Funeral: A service was held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel at Robertson Mueller Harper. Following committal services, John was laid to rest in Greenwood Memorial Park.

John was born Dec. 24, 1935, in Shreveport, La., to John H. Wendell Sr. and Adeline Morell Wendell. He graduated from Neville High School in Monroe, La., before attending Louisiana Tech University, where he earned a bachelor of science in petroleum engineering in 1959. He joined the United States Air Force in 1959 where he flew an array of jet aircraft, principally the F-100 Super Sabre and the F-105 Thunderchief. He flew 67 combat missions in an F-105D fighter bomber against targets in North Vietnam and other areas where hostile communist forces were operating. On the 67th combat mission, he led a complex strike force against a series of heavily defended targets north of Hanoi. A piece of shrapnel from a Soviet built SAM caused his aircraft to be enveloped in flames. His immediate capture was the prologue to a saga of 2,370 days of captivity by the North Vietnamese, where he survived stark conditions and unbridled cruelty. Ever the optimist, he viewed this period of his life as his single greatest learning experience, finding comfort in caring for his fellow prisoners of war. After his return on March 4, 1973, John brought his engineering acumen and flying experience to bear on 20 major weapon design projects, including serving as project manager of the conventional cruise missile and the No. 2 man on the AMRAAM. For his exemplary service to his country, he received 19 major awards and decorations, most notably 2 Silver Stars, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, 2 Bronze Stars, 6 Air Medals, and 2 Purple Hearts. He retired from the Air Force in 1979 at the rank of lieutenant colonel. He graduated with a master of business administration in finance and behavioral science from Southern Methodist University in 1975, where he met his wife, Bebe, and they married the same year. His work as a registered professional engineer involved acquisitions, finance, operations and evaluations of both conventional and unconventional oil and gas projects over the course of three decades. In recent years, as an entrepreneur, he was focused on improving the environment by transforming the negative externalities of natural gas production into a new source of purified water. Survivors: In addition to his wife of 34 years, Margaret Ann "Bebe" Ware Wendell, John is survived by their children, Ware Victor Wendell and his wife, Robyn, Margaret Kathryn Wendell, Elizabeth Kathleen Wendell and Morton Edward Wendell and his husband, Jonathan Hubble; John's children, Kathryn Elise Wendell, Angela Christine Hayes and her husband, Donnie, and John H. Wendell and his wife, Nancy; brother, Jay Morell Wendell and his wife, Jean; and many loving nephews, nieces and grandchildren.
