OBITUARY - The Salem, Indiana Democrat;1940:
Adam C. White, only child of James and Barbara Cauble White, was born January 8, 1858 in Highland, on the old Cauble homestead, and lived his entire life as a citizen of our county. He departed this life as the day was breaking on the morning of August 25, 1940 after an illness of more than sixteen weeks.
He was 82 years, 7 months and 17 days old.
Adam attended the country schools, and after completing his work in them he attended the Eikosi Academy in Salem and began as a teacher in our township schools; he followed the work for 8 terms.
On March 30th, 1884, he took as his wife Miss Emma Payne. With her they had traveled life’s paths together for 56 years. His death closed a happy married life. To this union were born three children, Lloyd, Ruth and Park. Lloyd is a citizen of Salem, Ruth, now Mrs. Emil Chenoweth, lives in Morgan county and Park, deceased after a short life of 13 months.
Adam was correspondent for the Salem Democrat for 25 years.
After his marriage he and his wife established a home in the Highland neighborhood and lived there until the autumn of 1910 when he was elected as County Clerk and served the 4 year term. He moved to Salem and spent the remainder of his life as a citizen of Salem. He served as janitor of the grade school for 18 years and retired on account of failing health.
Adam was a member of the Salem Methodist church, and an active worker in the church and Sunday School, especially when he lived in the Highland neighborhood. He was a good neighbor, an honest man, a kind father, a faithful husband and a loyal citizen of our county. Many things in his life were fitting things for us all to follow.
He leaves to mourn his going his faithful wife, Emma, who had worked so faithfully with him for more than a half a century, the son and daughter; three grandchildren, John Adam and Doris White, and Theresa Chenoweth, two half brothers, Hiram and Charles Barrett, two half-sisters, Elizabeth Rush and Anna Barrett, two cousins, Zella and Mattie White, a son-in-law, Emil Chenoweth, a daughter-in-law, Verna White, a granddaughter-in-law, Mrs. John White, a host of other relatives and friends who will greatly miss his presence among us. A mighty good citizen has been taken away.
HE SLEEPS
At rest from the cares of a busy life
Away from its toil, its sorrow and strife,
Silently, peacefully, under the sod.
Awaiting the call of a merciful God.
He Sleeps
He Sleeps.
May his memory through fast and fleeting years,
Be crowned with honor and hallowed with tears,
Affections, flowers shall lovingly bloom
In the sunshine of peace where at rest in the Tomb.
He Sleeps
He Sleeps.
But the glorious morning of light shall break
And Eternity’s King shall bit him awake!
Awake and live, Ne’er again to know
Of death, or pain, or the grave so low.
Where he sleeps
He Sleeps.
‘Tis not death, the Master has said,
That holds his form in its narrow bed.
It is rest, peace from freedom and strife,
It is joy, it is heaven, it is eternal life.
He Sleeps
He Sleeps.
He was buried in August 1940 at Crown Hill Cemetery, Salem, Washington Co., IN.
