WILBUR WHITE DIES IN KANSAS OF INFLUENZA
Word comes from Coffeeville (sic), Kas., telling of the death from pneumonia of Wilbur S. White, 28, grandson of the late John Larimore of Union Station and son of Sherman White. Mrs. John Black of Licking, Mrs. Jessie Brown of Granville, Mrs. D. M. Geiger of Hebron and Mrs. L. M. Harvey of Jersey are aunts of Wilbur White, while William Larimore of Union Station and Karl White of Hebron are his uncles.
Wilbur White, former city chemist of Cleveland died in a hosptal at Coffeyville, after a short illness. The body was taken to Cleveland for burial Wednesday.
Mr. White had gone to Kansas City to attend a conference in connection with his work. He was stricken with influenza soon after his arrival there. To secure hospital accommodations he was taken to Coffeyville.
Wilbur St. Clair White was the second child of Sherman S. and Blanche Larimore White and was born near Granville, O. Sept. 22, 1890. The family moved to Bucyrus several years ago when the White Lumber company began operations there. Wilbur was educated at Bucyrus high school and studied for three years at Denison University. An injury received in athletics resulted in his leaving school for a year. He then entered Yale but left there in 1909 when Mayor Newton D. Baker of Cleveland, now secretary of war, tendered him the appointment of city chemist of Cleveland. He filled the position capably for six years, resigning in 1918 to go with the National Refining company. He still was retained as consulting chemist for Cleveland. He was married June 23, 1916 to Miss Margaret B. Fretter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank B. Fretter of Cleveland. The wife and little son Frank, age 20 months, survive.
Mr. White's parents and three sisters survive. This is the second of their five children they have been called to mourn, the first born baby son dying in infancy. The sisters are Mrs. Mildred Gardner and Misses Gertrude and Kathryn White.
Wilbur White was very popular in Granville and among his friends in Cleveland and Bucyrus. He was a young man of quick intelligence, of a friendly and cheerful disposition who made friends rapidly. He was ??? ??? in his profession and had acquired an enviable position for a man of his years whild the future seemed to hold much greater things in promise. His death brings grief not only to those in the family circle but in great measure to the many who enjoyed a pleasant friendship with him and had been gratified at the success he was attaining. All those will extend their sympathy to the wife, the son, the parents and sisters. Mr. White was a member of the Granville Baptist church and Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
Note: Wilber's father-in-law, Frank B. Fretter worked at the National Refining Company prior to Wilber joining the company. Frank B. Fretter became president of the company shortly after Wilber's death.
He was buried in March 1919 at Lake View Cemetery, Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH, Findagrave #78169144.
