SAN DIEGO -- Robert O. Whitebread, 83, died of natural causes at his Point Loma home on March 19, 2015. Bob was born in Sterling, Illinois, in 1931. He attended Grossmont High School and graduated from SDSU, where he played rugby. Bob served in the Navy for two years and played basketball on the Navy team while stationed in Japan. He worked as a Director of Parks and Recreation in the following cities: El Cajon, Modesto, Monrovia and El Centro, California. He spent most of his career in San Diego, working for the State of California's Employment Development Department, assisting vets in finding employment. Bob's final position before retiring in 1995 was as an instructor with the Transition Assistance Program, which helped returning and retiring vets to acclimate to civilian life, create a career path and find employment. Bob made an impact on the lives of many young people and vets as a mentor, coach and friend. In the late 1970s Bob enjoyed working part-time as a house manager at the old Fox Theatre. He had the pleasure of meeting many fine actors, and was proud to have escorted the great Lena Horn, Rosemary Clooney, and Sammy Davis Jr. from the theater. Bob and wife Phyllis enjoyed traveling abroad, and they were regulars at the La Jolla Playhouse and the San Diego Symphony.
