Mrs. Nelle Dawalt Dies Early Today
Mrs. Nelle Dawalt, 55, widow of Dan Dawalt, died at one o’clock this morning at the home of her sister Mrs. Roy Huckleberry, 205 South Posey, following several months’ illness.
Daughter of Thomas and Belle Nuckles Whitson, her entire life was spent in Salem.
She was a graduate of Salem high school, a member of Weir Memorial Methodist Episcopal church, the Wesleyan Circle, the missionary society, of which she was treasurer the North Side home economics club, the Royal Neighbor and Pythian Sister lodges, and was treasurer of the Samuel Reid Woman’s Relief Corps and W. R. C. district treasurer. A fine business woman she ably served many years as bookkeeper for the Salem Building Loan Fund and Savings Association.
A natural-born scholar she was intensely interested in education and loved the beautiful in literature, art, music and nature.
A son, Raymond, died a number of years ago.
Funeral rites will be held at three o’clock Thursday afternoon at Smith Funeral Home with burial in Crown Hill cemetery.
Surviving are the son, Lieutenant Kenneth Dawalt, a graduate of the United States Military Academy, who is stationed at Schofield Barracks, Honolulu and two sisters, Mrs. Elmo Wood, New Castle and Mrs. Huckleberry.
She was buried in July 1939 at Franklin Cemetery, Washington Co., IN.

Betty Jean (B.J.) Whitten Fink, 79, has gone home to be with her Lord. B.J. was born December 28, 1934 to Robert Edwards and Elizabeth Cook Whitten in Dallas, Texas. She died February 2, 2014, at her home on Lake Amanda in Colmesneil, Texas, surrounded by her family. B.J. is survived by her loving husband of 51 years Walter, son Jerry Dan Godwin, Jr., daughter Kirsten Hardmant and numerous nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kimberly Murdock in 2006; and her brother, Robert Edwards Whitten.
After graduating from Highland Park High School in 1953, in Dallas, she attended the University of Texas.
B.J., Walt and family moved to Concord, California, in 1968, where she dedicated her life to Jesus Christ. B.J. became an accomplished prize-winning artist, author, speaker, song writer, chaplain, prayer warrior, encourager and more. She wrote, produced and directed several Christian plays, which were well received at various churches in California and Texas. While on the speaking circuit of the Christian Women’s Clubs in Northern California, she ministered to many new Christians. She also started a neighborhood bible study that grew to more than 150 women that became a new chapter of Women’s Aglow International, a parachurch ministry.
After returning to Texas in 1979, B.J. and close friend, Elizabeth Brown, started a Women’s Aglow chapter in Dallas. Moving to Houston in 1983, she started a local group, ‘Christians in the Performing Arts’ and again she started a Women’s Aglow chapter there. B.J. was instrumental in the beginning of a new Christian musical drama based on the second chapter of Acts. This ministry grew into “Upper Room Ministries” which was presented nationally and internationally. As a minister ordained by Foundation Ministries to serve our Lord, she served as a Chaplain at the Woodville Health and Rehab. Her ‘Love and Laughter Publishing Co.’ produced a very helpful guide to prayer titled “Time With God.”
B.J. loved her comfortable home by Lake Amanda. Her talents are seen there, displayed and admired by her family and visitors. B.J. will be missed by all who knew her.
Services to celebrate her life will be at First Baptist Church, Woodville, Texas on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Visiting and fellowship at 10:00 a.m.
