OBITUARY #2
Sallie Boling Payne; born 24 July 1856; died 7 May 1889; daughter of Silas Boling and Emeline Stanley; wife of Jordan Payne.
(NOTE: Most of the evidence indicates that the parents of Sarah were Isaac Boling (brother of Silas) and Anna Stanley (sister of Emeline). Silas and Emeline were alive and well as of the summer of 1860, and living near Emeline's parents in Washington County -- there is no apparent reason that one of their children would be living with the Stanley grandparents, whereas Isaac and Anna had apparently died in Missouri before the 1860 census was taken. DLB 2013)
Sallie J., wife of Jordan M. Payne, died at her home in Salem on Wednesday, May 8th, of consumption. The deceased was born June 24, 1856 and hence was in the 32d year of her age. Her maiden name was Boling and she was born in Missouri, but her parents dying when she was quite young, she was brought to this county and reared by her grand-parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Stanley. In 1875 she was married to Jordan M. Payne with whom she lived happily until the time of her death. To them were born five children, four of whom, all girls survive their mother, the oldest being 10 or 11 years old and the youngest 20 months. About two years ago she showed symptons of consumption and since that time had been gradually sinking. She was a devout Christian and had been a member of the M. E. church for 15 years. Her funeral occurred at the Quaker church on the 9th inst. according to the custom of the Society of Friends, and Elwood Trueblood delivered the address.
Mr. Payne is a good citizen and has the earnest sympathy of his neighbors, but most of all ones heart goes out to those little girls who are never more to know the watchful care and kind advice of a loving mother. Only those who have suffered such a loss and experienced the trials, temptations and vexations which beset such can truly appreciate their great loss. May the guiding hand of a gracious Providence aid and protect them.
She was buried on 9 May 1889 at Highland Friends Cemetery, Salem, Washington Co., IN.
