Robert enlisted in the Harrison Cavalry in Pocahontas County VA (WV) August 25, 1862. The Harrison Cavalry became Co. B of the 17th Cavalry (CSA). He was in the battle of Gettysburg in July of 1863. He was placed on detached service in Ashe County, North Carolina, and in 1864 the 17th Cavalry moved to Saltville, Virginia. Robert hadn't been paid for a year, so he resigned and returned home October 25, 1864.

In 1870, the family moved to Jackson County, West Virginia. Robert married Miriam Rhodes in Jackson County May 16, 1878.

Will Of Andrew Young Sr. August Co. VA 1855, Will Book #37 p358:

"...2nd, I direct my Executor to pay my grandson Robert H. Windle eighty dollars out of the proceeds of sd land." Robert Hanger Windle was born in 1826 at Harrison Co., VA (now WV), Age of 22 given in 1850 census -- possibly born about 1828.1 He was the son of Fielding Windle and Nancy Kerr Young. Robert Hanger Windle married Rebecca Ann Morris, daughter of Benjamin Morris and Mary McWhorter, on 23 November 1854 at Harrison Co., VA (now WV). Robert Hanger Windle married Miriam Rhodes, daughter of Solomon D. Rhodes and Catherine S. (?), on 16 May 1878 at Jackson Co., WV. Robert Hanger Windle died on 11 August 1896 at Jackson Co., WV. Funeral services for Robert Harriston Windle, 86, who died Tuesday in a Demopolis hospital, were to be at 3 p.m. today at the Forkland Methodist Church. The Rev. Marquis Wingard was to officiate with burial in the church cemetery and Cook and Spigener Funeral Home directing.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Robert H. Windle, Forkland; a daughter, Mrs. Lois Lewellen, Colmesneil, Texas: two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Cruise, Carrollton, and Mrs. Pinkie Hogue, Tuscaloosa; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and other relatives.
Nephews will be pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be men of the Forkland Methodist Church.
