Obituary -- (Findagrave.com):

Leo Wirtz
July 6, 1928 – November 25, 2011

Leo Wirtz, age 83, of 1710 Greene Street, died November 25, 2011, at the Ogden Manor in Ogden. His body has been cremated and a Graveside Service will be Saturday, December 3, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the Boone Memorial Gardens. Burial of his cremains will follow the service. A Celebration of Leo's Life will be at the Moose Lodge, 812-8th Street, on Saturday from noon until 4 p.m. where the family will be present to greet friends.

Leo Alfred Wirtz was born in Marshalltown, Iowa, on July 6, 1928, the son of Alfred J. and Bernice (Curry) Wirtz. On December 23, 1950, Leo married Della Deal in Boone. Leo was a Veteran of the Korean War, serving with the United States Army. For over 30 years, he was a truck driver for National By-Products, retiring July 31, 1990. In earlier years, Leo and Della owned and operated "The Office" Lounge and Blue Cloud Café in Boone. Leo enjoyed fishing, woodworking, old western movies, dancing, and smoking his pipe. He also liked family reunions and get-togethers.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, a son Leo Jr., and a sister Zelia. He is survived by his wife Della of Boone; three sons, David Wirtz and Carl Wirtz of Boone and William "Bill" Wirtz of Northwood; three daughters Roberta "Bobbii" Doyle and husband Michael of Houston, Texas, Jackie Askland and husband Dennis of Ames, and Linda Clarke and husband Doug of Boone; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Memorials in Leo's name may be directed to the family.

Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall is in charge of the arrangements.

NOTE: Jacqueline "Jackie" (Comstock) Askland was the biological daughter of Leo's sister Zelia and Maurice "Michael" Comstock. She appears to have been raised by her uncle Leo and aunt Della. "Judy Greene of Ogden", mentioned as a sister in Leo Jr.'s 1970 obituary, has not been identified -- she clearly was not a biological daughter of Leo and Della. DLB 2021.

He was buried in November 2011 at Boone Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Boone, Boone Co., IA, Findagrave #81445253.

Obituary -- (Findagrave.com, unknown newspaper):

Leo Wirtz, Jr. Killed Saturday

Ogden Woman Severely Injured;
File Manslaughter Charges

Leo Wirtz, Jr., 13 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Wirtz of Ogden, was killed Saturday, when he was struck by an auto driven by Elmer Dwayne Lingner, 41, of Jefferson, on new Highway 30 south of Boone around 8:30 p.m.

Mrs. Thomas (Jean) Koenig of Ogden was seriously injured. She was taken to the Boone County Hospital but was immediately transferred to Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, where she is listed in poor condition. One leg was amputated.

The freak accident occurred in the eastbound lane of the highway just west of the Kate Shelley Drive entrance near Boone.

The car, which had been occupied by young Wirtz and his dad, and Mr. and Mrs. Koenig, apparently stalled.

Mr. Koenig, recuperating from a back ailment, remained in the auto to steer while the other three occupants got out to push it off the road.

Several cars reportedly passed them while they were pushing but a car driven by Elmer Dwayne Lingner, 41, of Jefferson apparently did not see the troubled auto and rammed into it.

Both of young Wirtz' legs were severed and he was dead on arrival at the Boone County Hospital. Mrs. Koenig received severe leg and internal injuries.

Thomas Koenig and the older Wirtz were uninjured in the mishap. Lingner received a cut on on the chin but was treated and released form the Boone hospital.

The cars involved were demolished.

Highway Patrolman Orval Beaman, Richard Stockl and members of the Boone Police department said the Koenig car was pushed over 200 feet down the road by the collision impact.

Patrolman Beaman said Lingner will be charged with manslaughter. He is being held under $10,000 bond.

It is the seventh fatality in Boone County this year.

Leo Wirtz, Jr., son of Leo and Della Deal Wirtz, was born in Boone, Aug. 15, 1957. He had resided in Boone and was a member of the sixth grade at Bryant School until moving to Ogden, three months ago. The family lives east of Ogden in the home formerly occupied by Mert Andrew.

Survivors include his parents, three brothers, David, Billy and Carl, all at home; four sisters, Mrs. Michael (Roberta) Doyle of Boone, Jackie of Boone, Judy Greene of Ogden, and Mrs. Richard (Linda) Godwin of Webster City; and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James E. Deal of Kaukauna, Wis.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1970 at 1:30 p.m. at the Schroeder Funeral Home in Boone with The Rev. Gerald LaMotte, minister at the First United Methodist Church, in charge. Burial was at Boone Memorial Gardens.

NOTE: "Judy Greene of Ogden" is not an individual that I am able to identify with confidence in public records. She was not a biological child of Leo and Della Wirtz -- she was not mentioned in either of their obituaries. Jackie Godwin was Jacqueline Comstock, daughter of Leo Jr.'s aunt Lelia and her second husband, Maurice "Michael" Comstock. Jackie appears to have been raised by Leo Sr. and Della Wirtz. DLB 2021.

He was buried in September 1970 at Boone Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Boone, Boone Co., IA, Findagrave #63337556.

Note: With discovery of the 1876 marriage record, it is likely that Etta's mother was a first wife of William H. Grant, rather than Paulina Wehrwandt. (DLB 2012.) Pauline Wirwahn was born on 10 January 1852 at Indiana.1,2 She was the daughter of Henry Wirwahn and Elizabeth Shaffer.1 Pauline Wirwahn married William Henry Grant on 24 April 1871 at Cass Co., IN, Indexed as "Paulona Wearwant" in the Indiana marriage collection, 1800 - 1941, online at ancestry.com, which shows 24 APR 1876 as the date. However, it would appear from the 1900 census that not only her name, but also the year was mis-transcribed, as they indicated 29 years of marriage as of June, 1900. I am deducing that 24 APR 1871 was the actual date. (DLB 2012.)1,2 Pauline Wirwahn died on 20 September 1914 at age 62.
