BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES

DR. JOHN WOOSLEY was born in Christian County, Ky., December 23,1829, and is a son of Burrel T. Woosley, and grandson of Thomas Woosley, a soldier in the Revolution, who settled in Kentucky about the beginning of the present century. Thomas Woosley first settled in Lexington, afterward removed to Barren County, Ky., and finally to this county about 1814. He then located eight miles northwest of Hopkinsville, where he died in 1856. Burrel T., the father of Dr. J. H. was the third of five children born to Thomas Woosley, and was born in October, 1796, in Halifax County, Va. He attained his manhood in this county, married Elizabeth Reed, a native of Salisbury, N. C., where she was born in October, 1801. Burrel Woosley died in Johnson County. Kas., in October, 1860, and his widow died in Christian County, Ky., in 1881. To these parents were born seven children; Dr. John H. being the fourth ; Martha A., the wife of James L. Daniel; Rigdon T; Nancy B., wife of William T. Rodgers ; Dr. Burrel T; Alexander J; and Virginia, wife of Jacob Youtsler. John H. at the age of twenty went to Spring-field, Ill., and studied medicine under Dr. J. W. Jones, during which time he became personally acquainted with President Lincoln. He afterward graduated from the University of Louisville, and in 1855 began the practice of medicine in Edmondson County, Ky., whence in 1857 he was elected to the Kentucky State Legislature, serving one term in that body. During the war he went South, and was for a time connected with the Confederate Army as Assistant in the Commissary Department under E. M. Bruce. After the war he settled near Louisville, Jefferson County, Ky., where he engaged in his practice until coming to this county in 1870. Returning to Christian County he purchased a farm near where he was born, and there commanded an extensive practice. Since 188 he has been a resident of Hopkinsville, but is still actively engaged in the practice of medicine. He has been twice married : first, in 185? to Elvira A., daughter of Samuel Woosley, by whom he had three children Dr. Collins B. Woosley; Lavinia E., wife of William Grisham, and Josephine I. Woosley. His present wife is Jennie A., daughter of Joseph Turner, and is a native of Christian County. Dr. Woosley is a member of the State and County Medical Associations. He died in October 1860 at Johnson Co., KS.

MARY VIRGINIA YOUTSLER
Mary Virginia Woosley wsa born in Christian county, Ky., on March 22, 1848 and died Nov. 3, 1918 at the home of J. B. Cosman, after an illness of six months, with diabetes, having been confined to her bed for three months.

She was married in April 1866 to Jacob Youtsler who with six children survive her. John C. and Samuel T. of Boise, Bismark of Letha, Henry of Sweet, Mrs. Tom Windle and Mrs. J. B. Cosman of Payette. One daughter, Arpie May Hornaman, having passed away Nov. 5, 1895.

Grandma Youtsler was an early pioneer of this section having immigrated by team with her husband and seven small children from the middle west in 1880 and had many of the early pioneers of the Payette Valley among her friends.

She lived and died with great faith in God, as she knew him, having been a member of the Baptist church since her girlhood days, and never doubting her relation to him. Her last conscious moments were for the welfare and comfort of those near her.

Besides her husband and children, 18 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren and a niece, Ida Woosley, who assisted in the care of her through her last illness, she leaves to mourn her loss a host of loving and thoughtful friends.

Funeral services were held from Lauer’s Undertaking Parlor, conducted by Rev. W. H. Swartz, pastor of the Baptist Church. Interment was made in Riverside cemetery.

     Catherine Wootan was born on 10 October 1920 at Clark Co., IN.1 She was the daughter of Harry Wesley Wootan and Myrtle E. Cooley. Catherine Wootan married Clarence Fredrick Schmetzer in February 1942 at Jefferson Co., KY, marriage license reported in the 26 FEB 1942 edition of the Louisville, Kentucky Courier-Journal newspaper, page 20. Catherine Wootan lived in 1995 at Sellersburg, Clark Co., IN. She died on 27 June 2014 at Sellersburg, Clark Co., IN, at age 93

Catherine Schmetzer, 99, Sellersburg

Funeral services for Catherine Schmetzer, 99, Sellersburg, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Louisville with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery. She died Friday, June 27, 2014, at Maple Manor Christian Home.

She was a native of Borden and graduated from Borden High School in 1938. Catherine was a retired Clerk Treasurer for the town of Sellersburg and also worked at the Sellersburg License Branch. She was a 70 year member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Louisville. She was a Board member of the Hickory Grove Cemetery for over 50 years. She was preceded in death by her brother, Wesley Wootan and a sister, Phyllis Long.
Surviving are her companion of 17 years, Kenneth Ritter, Sellersburg; son Alan Schmetzer and wife, Janet, Indianapolis; grandchildren Angela and Jennifer Schmetzer; great-grandson, David Suki; several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Garr Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hosparus of Southern Indiana.

She was buried in 2014 at Evergreen Cemetery, Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY, Findagrave #190763868.

Phyllis L. Long, 68; of New Albany

Funeral services for Phyllis L. Long, 68, of New Albany, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, at the Oak Street Chapel of Seabrook Dieckmann and Naville Funeral Homes, with burial in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park. She died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005, at her residence.

She was the former Phyllis Wootan. She was a homemaker and a member of Central Christian Church.

Survivors include a son, Barry Long, New Albany; two daughters, Pamela Striegel, Corydon and Shelly Pinnick and husband, Greg, Floyds Knobs; a sister, Catherine Schmetzer, Sellersburg; and four grandchildren, Edward, Jessica, Heather and Erin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Long Jr.

Visitation at the funeral home will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, Tuesday, Aug. 9 and after 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10.

The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society.

She was buried in August 2005 at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park, New Albany, Floyd Co., IN, Findagrave #151097601.

     Sarah Ellen Wooton was born on 13 February 1876 at Perry (now Leslie) Co., KY, per death certificate.2,3 She was the daughter of Daniel Boone Wooton and Nancy Ann Murrell.2 Sarah Ellen Wooton lived on 12 June 1900 at Wooton Magisterial District, Leslie Co., KY, in her parents' household, age 24, no occupation, son William listed as a Wooton.2 She married Luther Osborne before 20 January 1920, commmon law marriage -- she was listed as an "Osborn", wife of Luther Osborne, on the 1900 census, but they were not legally married.3 Sarah Ellen Wooton lived on 16 April 1930 at Big Creek District, Leslie Co., KY, with daughter Emma Osborn's family, name badly written as "Sira Wooton".4 She died on 16 November 1961 at Kaliopi, Leslie Co., KY, at age 85
