Thursday Sept. 21, 1933 The Marion Sentinel
Friends here have received word of the death, Monday, of Mrs. J.J. Smythe, a member of one of Linn county's first families. She passed away in a Minneapolis hospital. Pneumonia was the cause of death.
For many years the Smythe family was active in Marion social and civic life. They left here many years ago. Mr. Smythe at one time was president of the First National bank, serving prior to J.S. Alexander. He has been dead for some time.
Mrs. Smythe had many friends here among the older residents. They remember her as a charming woman who easily surrounded herself with sincere friends.
Her son, William Smythe, is captain of the U.S. battleship, Tennessee, which is now cruising in Pacific waters. He has ordered the body of his mother held in Minneapolis until he can return, which will be about the middle of October. At that time the body will be brought to Marion for interment.
Captain William Smythe was in charge of all naval operations at Long Beach during the recent earthquake disaster.

She was buried in September 1933 at Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion, Linn Co., IA, Findagrave #130909823.
