     Elizabeth Bowne was born on 8 October 1658. She was the daughter of John Bowne and Hannah Feake. Elizabeth Bowne died on 14 October 1721 at Flushing, Queens Co. (now), NY, at age 63.

     Hannah Bowne was born on 10 April 1665. She was the daughter of John Bowne and Hannah Feake. Hannah Bowne died on 30 December 1707 at Flushing, Queens Co. (now), NY, at age 42.

     Hudson Bowne was born on 4 July 1923.¹ He was the son of Brownlee Bowne and Pauline Hudson.¹

     John Bowne was Converted to Quaker.

JOHN BOWNE, born 1627, son of Thomas, in the year of his marriage to Hannah Feake was not a Friend, but Hannah became acquainted with them as they were holding their meetings in the woods, and she soon became a member. Her husband attending one of these meetings with her, became deeply impressed, and he soon joined them, and for some time thereafter the meetings were held at his house, and the following is taken from the old Dutch Records now preserved in Albany:

"Complaints made 24th of August, 1662, by the magistrates of Flushing, that many of the inhabitants are followers of the Quakers who hold their meetings at the house of John Bowne." An ordinance of the West India Company of 1662 provided that "Besides the Reformed religion no conventicles should be holden in houses, barns, ships, woods, or fields, under the penalty of fifty guilders for the first offense, double for the second, and arbitrary correction for every other."

Consequently, John Bowne was arrested on 9th month 1st day, 1662, and was taken prisoner to Fort Amsterdam, and on the 14th of the same month the following judgment was entered: "Because John Bowne, at present prisoner, dwelling at Flushing, L. I., has made no scruple in vilipendation of the orders and mandates of the Director General and Council of the New Netherlands, we do in justice to the high and mighty states of the United Provinces and the Administrators of the West India Company of the Chamber of Amsterdam, having heard of the demand of the substitutes, and the acknowledgment of the prisoner, have condemned and do condemn the said John Bowne by those present--Boete--5 and 20 pounds Flemish with the charges of the Justician and with express admonition and interdict to abstain from all such forementioned meetings and conventicles, or else for the second boete he be condemned in a double boete, and for the third boete to be banished out of this Province of New Netherlands."

John refused to pay the fine and was confined in a dungeon, kept on bread and water, and no person was allowed to speak to him. As this did not seem to change his mind, he was taken to Stadthaus and put in the prison room there, and was allowed to see his wife and friends. The Court then notified him that they had resolved that he must pay his fine or be sent out of the County, or he would be set free if he would promise to leave the country in three months. He remained firm in his purpose not to compromise his principles. On the 21st of the 10th month he was permitted to visit his friends under a promise to return in three days, and on the 31st of that month he was put on board ship and sent a prisoner to Holland. He arrived at Amsterdam on the 29th of February, 1663. Notice of his refusal to pay his fine was sent to the West India Company, and after considering his case they drew up a paper for him to sign. In reply he said: "Friends, the paper drawn up for me to subscribe I have perused and weighed, and do find the same not according to that engagement to me through one of your members, viz.: That he or you would do therein by me as you would be done unto, and not otherwise. For which of you being taken from your wife and family, without just cause, would be bound from returning to them unless upon terms to act contrary to your conscience, and deny your faith and religion, yet this in effect do you require of me and not less. But, truly, I cannot think that you did in sober earnest ever think I would subscribe to any such thing, it being the very thing for which I rather chose freely to suffer want of the company of my dear wife and children, imprisonment of my person, the ruin of my estate in my absence there, and the loss of my goods here, than to yield or consent to such an unreasonable thing as you here by would enjoin me unto. For which I am persuaded that you will not only be judged in the sight of God, but by good and godly men, rather to have mocked at the oppressions of the oppressed, and added afflictions to the afflicted than herein to have done to me as you in the like case would be done unto, which the royal cause of our God requires. I have with patience and moderation waited several weeks expecting justice from you, but behold an addition to my oppression in the measure I receive. Wherefore I have this now to request for you, that the Lord will not lay this to your charge, but to give eyes to see and hearts to do justice, that you may find mercy with the Lord in the day of judgment.

In the 4th month he was released and returned to America via England and the Island of Barbadoes, but did not reach Flushing until Jan. 30, 1663.

The authorities in Amsterdam sent the officials in New Amsterdam the following decision, dated April 16, 1663: "We, finally, did see from your last letter, that you had exiled and transported hither a certain Quaker named John Bowne, and although it is our cordial desire that similar and other sectarians might not be found there, yet as the contrary seems to be the case, we doubt very much if rigorous proceedings against them ought not to be discontinued except you intend to check and destroy your population, which, however, in the youth of your existence, ought rather to be encouraged by all possible means. Wherefore it is our opinion that some connivance would be useful that the consciences of men, at least, ought ever to remain free and unshackled. Let every one be unmolested as long as he is modest, as long as his conduct in a political sense is unimpeachable, as long as he does not disturb others or oppose the government. This maxim of moderation has always been the guide of the magistrates of this city, and the consequence has been that from every land people have flocked to this asylum. Tread thus in their steps, and we doubt not you will be blessed. (Signed) The directors of the West India Co., Amsterdam, Department.

They are confirmed, June 25, 1679.

     Clyde Edmond Bowser was born on 17 January 1908 at Pike Twp., Clark Co., OH. He married Iness Marie Walls, daughter of Alonzo Walls and Chloe Orissa Yoakum, on 7 December 1933.      Eldon Lee Bowser was born on 30 November 1937 at Springfield, Clark Co., OH. He was the son of Clyde Edmond Bowser and Iness Marie Walls. Eldon Lee Bowser married Mary R. Owen on 26 January 1973 at Troy, Miamii Co., OH. Eldon Lee Bowser died on 2 March 2012 at Piqua, Miamii Co., OH, at age 74

PIQUA - Eldon L. Bowser, 74, of 906 W. Grant St., Piqua, died at 8 p.m. Friday, March 2, 2012, at his residence. He was born Nov. 30, 1937, in Springfield, to the late Clyde Edmond and Iness Marie (Walls) Bowser. He married Mary R. Owen Jan. 26, 1973, in Troy; and she survives.

Other survivors include a daughter, Cheryl (Thomas) Beck of Piqua; a son, Douglas Penny of Piqua; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Arthur (Gay) Bowser of Conover; and three sisters, Florene Burns of Greenville, Nancy (John) Harvey of Celina, and Judy (William) Robertson of Dunmor, Ky.

Mr. Bowser retired from Enpo (Crane) Pump Co. following 39 years of employment, after which he worked as a greeter for Walmart for seven years. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army. As an outdoorsman he particularly enjoyed fishing and camping. Sincere appreciation is extended to Heartland of Piqua, Upper Valley Medical Center and Hospice of Miami County for their special care.

A service to honor his life will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2012, at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home, with Arthur J. Bowser officiating. Burial will follow at Miami Memorial Park, Covington.

Mrs. Margaret Anna Wiley, 78, widow of John Wiley, died at her home at Jennings, Md., Saturday, September 13.

She was born at McHenry, Md., May 6, 1874 (sic), the daughter of Peter and Jane Bowser.

She is survived by three sons, Wilson W. Wiley of Baltimore, Alvin and Lawrence Wiley, Jennings; three daughters, Mrs. P. J. Kahl of Accident, Md., Mrs. Delbert Broadwater and Mrs. Lonnie Broadwater of Jennings; 18 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Dolph Bowser of Accident and Samuel Bowser of Berlin Pa., and two sisters, Mrs. Ella Smith of Accident and Mrs. Clara Sweitzer of Wadsworth, O.

She was a member of the Jennings Lutheran Church, where services were held Wednesday afternoon, the Rev. Mr. Kessel officiating. Interment in Grantsville Cemetery.

Max Jacob Bowser married Marian Jean Roynan, daughter of John Marion Roynan and Rhoda Ellen Price, on 9 June 1948 at Los Angeles Co. (probably), CA. Max Jacob Bowser lived in 1974 at Fresno, Fresno Co., CA. He and Marian Jean Roynan were divorced in January 1975 at Fresno Co., CA.

     Susan Bowser married Philip Erbaugh on 12 August 1875 at Montgomery Co., OH. Susan Bowser died on 26 October 1924.

     Baker P. Bowsher was born on 24 July 1864 at Palmyra, Macoupin Co., IL.¹ He was the son of Russell B. Bowsher and Mary Catherine Range.¹ Baker P. Bowsher married Ellen M. Hunt on 27 February 1889 at Macoupin Co., IL. Baker P. Bowsher lived on 4 June 1900 at Bois D'Arc Twp., Montgomery Co., IL, farming.² He died on 15 April 1957 at Carlinville, Macoupin Co., IL, at age 92.
