Her brother Robert Burns served with General Sherman throughout the Civil War without injury. She worked her way through the Tabor Literary Institute in Tabor, Iowa graduating with honors. She and her husband homesteaded in the Oak Dale Community (near Downs) in Ross Township, Osborne County, Kansas, They raised a large family and celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary together at their retirement home in Downs, Kansas.
She was buried in March 1919 at Oakdale Cemetery, Downs, Osborne Co., KS, Findagrave #45800275.

Dorothy grew up in Marshalltown where she gradated from the Marshalltown High School in 1930. She was married to Kenneth Eldon Stewart, September 27, 1934 in Gallatin, Missouri. She worked for a brief time at Lennox Industries during WWII and later worked at Fisher Controls for 10 years. Dorothy was an avid bowler, enjoyed crocheting, ceramics and playing cards. She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Marshalltown. Dorothy is survived by her hausband; Kenneth Stewart, Marshalltown, Iowa, two daughters: Sandra and husband Rex Slingluff, Marshalltown, Iowa and Densie Stewart, St Louis, Missouri, four grandchildren: Robin & Husband Mark Johnston, Patricia and husband Kirk Moats, Diane Wooster and Jill & husband Dale Schultz and three great grandchildren: Travis Schumann and Derrick & Lindsi Moats. she was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter: Sally, five sisters and two brothers.
