Biography -- (Findagrave.com):
From Kathie Kintzley Hardy:
Born on 8 December 1801 in Virginia and she died on 17 June 1880 in Benton Co., Oregon. She married Moses Starr on 1 August 1819 in Belmont Co., Ohio. He was born on 2 June 1787 in Hampshire Co., Virginia and he was the son of James Starr and Nancy Redick. They were Irish Quakers that later became Methodists. James Starr was born in 1761 in New Jersey and Nancy Redick was born on 14 April 1769 in Belfast, Ireland.
At age 19 she became the stepmother to 5 children. Her husband, Moses, was also a help to her own family and siblings. He had purchased land in Belmont County, Ohio as early as 1814. In 1817, Moses was a Justice of the Peace in Belmont Co., Ohio. He was a farmer and engaged in mercantile pursuits. In 1839, after a number of years in Belmont County, Moses Starr and Elizabeth Calhoun Starr moved with their family of 10 children and some of their friends to Van Buren County, Iowa. The last two of their 12 children were born in Iowa. In 1853, Moses and Elizabeth with 7 of their children, most of them grown left by wagon train for Oregon. They were joining three families of their grown children who had arrived in Oregon in 1847, 1848 and 1850.
Moses died on 24 September 1853 in Clackamas Co., Oregon, a few days after he arrived there with his family. Elizabeth was a wise counselor and true companion to her husband. Saddened and bereaved though she was by his death in 1853, she courageously took his place at the head of the little band and led them on to their destination, and in Benton County, one and one-half miles northwest of Starrs Point, took up a donation claim of one hundred and sixty acres. With true pioneer instinct she set about to bring order out of chaos, and her success was exemplified in the fine improvements, which from time to time were made upon the tract. Her ability as a physician was of an unusual order and many a sickroom was brightened and cheered by her presence. Of the twelve children born to her, five sons were ministers of the gospel, in this respect following in the footsteps of their father, who was a local preacher and class leader. She died at 79 years of age. Moses and Elizabeth are buried in the Alpine Cemetery in Benton Co., Oregon.
She was buried in June 1880 at Alpine Cemetery, Alpine, Benton Co., OR, Findagrave #30595621.
