Steven was born August 2, 1946 in Hamburg, Iowa, the son of Oscar and Doris (Munsinger) Carlson. He was a 1964 graduate of Fremont Mills High School. Steven received his bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Iowa in 1969.
Steven was employed by Hy-Vee for 42 years, first at Clarinda, and later at several Iowa City stores. He managed the Hy-Vee Waterfront store’s dairy department for many years.
Steven volunteered for ICARE (Iowa Center for AIDS Resources and Education) and was active in the LGBT community. His passions included photography and writing.
Steven is survived by his nephews, Doug Carlson and his wife, Lori, of Shenandoah, IA and Chris Carlson (Tangee Griffith) of Glenwood, IA ; his sister-in-law, Pam Carlson of Shenandoah, IA: nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and many friends.
Steven was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Stanley.
Cause of death: HIV and heart conditions.

The Rev. George C. Carmichael, former pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church here, died on Thursday at a Chicago hospital, where he had been for the past six weeks, when failing health forced him to leave Keota, Colo., where he was in charge of a church.
Funeral services were held here on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at the Methodist church. Those taking part in the service were Dr. W. P. Leek of Fond du Lac, the Rev. Walter A. Hall, of Tory Center, the Rev. Lorenz Knutzen, of Seymour, formerly pastor here, and the Rev. Anton Hatlestad, of Milton Junction. The church choir sang several hymns during the services. More than 25 pastors of the Wisconsin conference were present. Burial took place in Graceland cemetery.
The deceased was born Aug. 16, 1863, in Dallas county, Alabama. He first entered the ministry in Wisconsin in 1894. He served various churches in the State, and from 1923 to 1925 he was in charge of the local church. He then became superintendent of the department of home grants for the Methodist Sunday school board in Chicago.
A breakdown in health forced the Re. Carmichael to go to Colorado Springs in 1926. He later took charge of a congregation at Keota, Colo., but six weeks ago, he came to Chicago, where he passed away.
Surviving are his widow, formerly Miss Marian Fell, of this city, and four daughters, Lillian of Fond du Lac, Mrs. Naomi Koenig of New York; Ruth of Chicago, and Florence Mary. The Rev. Carmichael was married to Miss Fell about three years ago.
