Note: Thomas was a Second Lieutenant at the Battle of White Plains, NY. He was wounded and left for dead at a house surrounded by the British during the battle. Several Americans were taken prisoner, including Thomas, but by careful nursing he recoverded from his wounds. For his courage he was promoted to Captain and eventually General. Captain William Carpenter

     Note: Considered the founder of the Rehoboth, Massachusetts branch of Carpenters. Close friend of Governor William Bradford, who married his cousin Alice Carpenter. He "bought" the area now known as Rehoboth (8 square miles) from the Indians. He was Proprietor's Clerk during 1643 - 1649. Contributed to the expenses of King Phillip's War. Was a Selectman of Rehoboth in 1647, and was a Captain of the militia.

Will written 21 April 1658, proven 7 February 1659.

A fine writer, an educated man of affairs, owner of numerous books, including Latin and Greek, as listed in his will. Captain William Carpenter was buried at Newman Cemetery, Rumford Co., RI. He was born on 23 May 1605 at Amesbury, Wiltshire, England. He was the son of Richard Carpenter and Alice Knight. Captain William Carpenter married Elizabeth Peake Arnold on 1 November 1635 at Amesbury, Wiltshire, England. Captain William Carpenter died circa 1658 at Pawtuxet, Providence Co., RI.

     Note: He is in his father's household in the 1820 and 1830 Census. He is head of the household on page 70 of the 1840 Rockingham Co. Census with one male 5-10 (?), one male 20-30 (he is 28), one female under age 5 (Sarah age 2), one female 20-30 (Phebe).

By November, 1850 when the census was taken, his first wife, Phebe Henton, has died and he has married her cousin Hannah Henton. He is a farmer aged 36 who was born in VA and has real estate valued at $15K. His household consists of Hannah age 24, Sarah age 12, Margaret age 9, Catherine age 6, Sarah age 79 (his mother), and James Reed age 26 (a miller). His daughter Catherine is also counted in his sister, Elizabeth (and Enos) Keezle's household as is his son George (age 3). These are all children from his first marriage-- he and Hannah were just married in November.
