He was buried in March 1845 at Old German Cemetery at East Orange Street and Balimore Road, Shippensburg, Cumberland Co., PA.

     Joseph A. Clippinger was born circa April 1860 at Cumberland, Allegany Co., MD.¹ He was the son of Valentine Bone Clippinger and Catherine Startzman.¹ Joseph A. Clippinger married Alice (?) circa 1905, no children. Joseph A. Clippinger died on 2 July 1944. He was buried in July 1944 at Ferncliff Cemetery, Springfield, Clark Co., OH.
Note: Joseph Clippinger was listed on the 1860 census and shown as age 1/12 (born about April). There was no Eva preceding him in the family -- brother John was age 3 (born about 1857). In the 1870 census, a daughter Eva is shown as age 10, and Joseph was listed as age 7 (born about 1863). In 1880, Joseph was listed as age 19 and "Effie" as age 18.

Note: Joseph Anthony Clippinger was a lay minister in the Methodist Church, and preached strong sermans from the pulpit against his father's allegedly abusive use of alcohol. As a result of this public criticism, the family relationships were very poor, and the grandchildren were seldom allowed to visit the grandparents. A story told by Joseph Granville Clippinger (1873 - 1947) was that he had a single visit with his grandparents at age 6 (about 1880), and they were introduced to him as an uncle and aunt. Elizabeth, described as "brown as a berry", brought a plate of bread chunks and milk to Joseph, who then stamped his feet on the wooden floor. A pair of blacksnakes then came up through the floorboards, crawled onto his lap, and ate the bread and milk. This story was repeated to Donald L. Boyd in 2013 by a granddaughter of Joseph G. Clippinger.

He married Elizabeth Smitley, daughter of Solomon Smitley and Mary Bumcrotz, in 1869, Elizabeth reported a total of 9 children born, 5 or 6 living as of the 1900 census.^3,4 Joseph Anthony Clippinger lived in 1870 at New Carlisle, Clark Co., OH.³ He lived on 15 June 1900 at 11 North Shaffer Street, Springfield, Clark Co., OH, book agent.⁴ He died in 1902 at Clark Co., OH,

Of Joseph A. Clippinger at Springfield -- Four Children in Dayton.

Joseph A. Clippinger, one of the best known citizens of Springfield was found dead in bed Wednesday morning by his wife, who went to ask him if he was feeling any better, as he had complained the previous day of being ill. Death is thought to have been due to heart trouble.

Mr. Clippinger was born in Maryland county, Virginia (sic), July 22, 1826 and in 1869 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Miller. He went to Springfield in 1877 and has resided there ever since. He was at one time prominently identified with society there and being possessed of a pleasing address and capable of making friends readily, his acquaintance is very extended. He leaves ten children of whom Mrs. Olive Muns (sic), Mrs. Noah Stein, Mrs. Ada Clark and Frank Clippinger reside in Dayton.

Word has been received here today of the death last Wednesday of Mrs. Lillian Campbell, 69, wife of Col. J. Kirk Campbell, of a cerebral hemhorage (sic) at her home in Delaware, Ohio.

Colonel Campbell was ROTC commandant at Kansas State College from 1939 to 1944, during which time the Campbells lived at 117 North 14th.

Surviving besides the husband are a son, Jack Campbell of Upper Arlington, Va. (sic), a sister, Mrs. Martha Neiback (sic) of Plymouth, Mich., and one grandson.
