Charles Arnold Custer began military service Vietnam War service, U.S. Army infantry, three tours of duty. He married Shirley Ann Rounds, daughter of Frederick Nathanial Rounds and Violet Loretta Broadwater. Charles Arnold Custer lived at Barton, Allegany Co., MD. He died on 29 December 2020 at Barton, Allegany Co., MD, at age 77
Obituary -- (Findagrave.com Memorial #220550261):
Charles Arnold "Bugs" Custer, 77 years old, of Barton, passed away Dec. 29, 2020, at his home due to a long struggle with cancer.
Born on Aug. 8, 1943, he was the son of the late Charles and Ollie Custer. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Shirley A. Custer; sisters, Katherine Marchinke and Darlene Green.
Charles Custer served three tours in Vietnam as an infantryman in the United States Army, earning awards for his service and Honorably Discharged after his last tour of duty. He also was past commander for several years at Barton American Legion Post 189, a dedicated member of Barton United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge 161.
He worked as a dragline operator at a local coal mine and at the Kelly Springfield Tire Company until it closed, and retired from the Kingsford Charcoal Plant.
Charles Custer was an avid hunter, until his health kept him from enjoying the great outdoors. He would tell the story of an eight-point buck he shot over 300 yards away on a hillside and it rolled down a gully. He would tell how it took him hours to retrieve the buck and the antlers are still hanging in the family home. He was an avid sports fan of the Baltimore Ravens and the Washington Redskins. He went to every American Legion Convention in Ocean City, even after his health held him back from doing other things. Family always came first and he will be missed by all who knew him.
Charles is survived by his son, Chad Custer, of Hagerstown; stepson, Geoffrey Goodrich and wife, Lois, of Street; his sisters, Ruth Miller, of Westernport, and Helena Gage, of Yuma, Ariz. Charles is also survived by a special grandson that he was raising, Lucas Sevy-Custer; his grandchildren, Geoffrey Goodrich Jr., Brittiany Goodrich, Chelsea Goodrich-Hall; and two great-grandsons. Among many other relatives, too many to mention.
Charles was always a giving person to all and continued in death. Per his wishes, Charles' body was donated to the Maryland Anatomy Board.
There will be a memorial service by the American Legion and Masonic Lodge, Thursday, Jan. 7, 2021, starting at 6 p.m. at Barton Post 189. COVID-19 guidelines will be adhered to.
