BOULDER, Colo. – Malcolm A. “Mal” Deans, 83, who was a reporter and editor at newspapers around the country, including the Philadelphia Bulletin, before becoming a popular journalism teacher at the University of Colorado, died of pancreatic cancer Thursday in Boulder.
Students consistently rated Mr. Deans among the best teachers at the School of Journalism. Mr. Deans work from 1876 – 1987 included creating the Campus Press student newspaper and developing an internship program that let students work at area newspapers in their senior year.
While at the university, he became the Rocky Mountain News’ readers’ representative in 1983, believed to be the first ombudsman at any Colorado newspaper. He also worked part-time as a copy editor for the Rocky Mountain News and occasionally wrote articles. After spending a month in Chile, he wrote a series about how that nation was faring under a dictatorship.
Born Jan. 4, 1922, during a blizzard at his family’s farmhouse in Phoenixville, Chester County, Mr. Deans was drafted into the military and spent most of his time in the Army at Camp Lee, Va.
His newspaper career began with a reporting job at the California Bulletin in San Francisco. He worked for several evening newspapers. He was at the Philadelphia Bulletin from the 1960s until 1975.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Deans; daughter Kathryn Deans-Schaub of Philadelphia; sons Timothy M. Deans of San Diego and Jeffrey Foss of Brighton, Colo; a brother, John Deans of Coronado, Calif., and a grandson.

The deceased was employed as an inspector on the state super highway. He graduated from Shippensburg State Teachers’ college and from Gettysburg college in 1927.
Mr. Deardorff formerly taught school in Fairfield and at the Arendtsville Vocational school.
In addition to his parents he is survived by his wife, the former LaRue Hostetter, to whom he was married February 15, 1930; two brothers, Myles and Harold and one sister, Burnelle, all of Arendtsville; a niece and three nephews.
Funeral services from the late home in Arendtsville Monday afternoon at 2:00 conducted by the Rev. George H Bekheimer. Interment in Flohr’s cemetery.

L. Burnelle Deardorlf. 92, of 267 High St., Cashtown, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, in Comfort Care, Fairfield.
Born Jan. 10, 1907 in Franklin Township, Adams County, she was a daughter of the late Quintin and Martha Bucher Deardorff.
She was a member of Flohr's Lutheran Church, McKnightstown. A graduate of Shippensburg University, she taught third grade at Franklin Township Elementary School in the Gettysburg Area School District for 43 years. She was a member of PSEA, a longtime volunteer at Piney Mountain Home, Fayetteville; a member of the Gettysburg Hospital Auxiliary and the McKnightstown Senior Citizens.
She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at Flohr's Lutheran Church, with the Revs. Douglas Y. Boden and Charles Falk Jr. officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

L. Burnelle Deardorlf. 92, of 267 High St., Cashtown, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, in Comfort Care, Fairfield.
Born Jan. 10, 1907 in Franklin Township, Adams County, she was a daughter of the late Quintin and Martha Bucher Deardorff.
She was a member of Flohr's Lutheran Church, McKnightstown. A graduate of Shippensburg University, she taught third grade at Franklin Township Elementary School in the Gettysburg Area School District for 43 years. She was a member of PSEA, a longtime volunteer at Piney Mountain Home, Fayetteville; a member of the Gettysburg Hospital Auxiliary and the McKnightstown Senior Citizens.
She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at Flohr's Lutheran Church, with the Revs. Douglas Y. Boden and Charles Falk Jr. officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
