Clarence Ashur DeFries

M, b. 7 February 1923, d. 6 July 2011
Clarence Ashur DeFries was also known as "Chuck". He was born on 7 February 1923 at Auburn, Sangamon Co., IL. He was the son of William Asher DeFries and Clara Minnie Landers. Clarence Ashur DeFries married Nelva Ruth Toms, daughter of David Edwin Toms and Grace Rutherford Hamilton, on 5 September 1945 at Fairfield (now Fairborn), Greene Co., OH. Clarence Ashur DeFries died on 6 July 2011 at Katy, Harris Co., TX, at age 88

Obituary --( Findagrave.com):

Clarence Ashur DeFries, born February 7, 1923, in Auburn, Illinois and grew up with his five sisters in Brownsburg and then Greencastle, Indiana, C.A. 'Chuck' DeFries, 88, took his final flight to the heavens early Wednesday morning, July 6, 2011.

He served in WWII with the U.S. Army Air Corps serving on the European front in North Africa and Italy. On his return from the war, he married his princess and love of his life, Nelva Ruth Toms, September 5, 1945 in Fairborn, Ohio, home of Wright Field and Wright Patterson Air Force Base.

Chuck, as he was known to his friends, loved airplanes and everything about flight. He worked in aircraft his entire career, for 25 years with North American-Rockwell (now Boeing) which contracted with the Navy for the jet trainers the Navy flew, living at several points across the country and overseas, raising his family from locations including Ohio, Oklahoma, California, Arizona, Washington D.C., Mississippi, Florida, and Texas. He retired from Rockwell in 1978 and continued his aircraft work with Civil Service as part of Chief of Naval Air Training Command (CNATRA) at NAS Corpus Christi until his retirement in 1992. He remained in Corpus Christi until a move to Katy, Texas in November 2007.

His love of airplanes, beginning in his career at the home of the Wright brothers, carried on into the nation's race into space, including a ride with the legendary Chuck Yeager who would break the sound barrier in flight, to connections with astronauts Gus Grissom and Buzz Aldrin, as Rockwell also built the Saturn rocket which carried the Apollo lunar module into space.

Quick with a laugh, a smile and a conversation, Chuck was known to all for his wit and easy manner, and to his family as a loving and caring husband, father, and grandfather. Bonnie and Bill remember fondly those cross-country trips for moving or vacations, even if we never stopped, of driving across the highway singing 'Old Dan Tucker' and 'This Land is Your Land.' He loved convertibles (especially Corvettes), was a natty dresser, and enjoyed working with natural wood. Eventually, age and accidents required that he no longer have his automobile. When asked if he missed his car, his quick-wit reply was 'I wish I'd missed the other one.'

Above all, he left a living example of what it means to love' God, Family, country, proven throughout his life in lessons to everyone with whom he came into contact, teaching love through his actions, and displaying unswerving devotion and complete and utter dedication to his wife of almost 66 years, up to the very end with his constant refrain, 'Is Nellie all right?'

He is preceded in death by his parents, William Ashur DeFries and Clara Minnie Landers DeFries; and sisters, Vivian Dickerson, Elizabeth Clark, Juanita Poynter, and Lavonne Strange.

He is survived by his wife, Nellie; sister, Neva Belle York of Greencastle, Indiana; daughter, Bonnie May and her husband Don of Katy; son, Bill DeFries and his wife Claudia of Corpus Christi; grandchildren, Kim May and her husband Matt Steinberg of Katy, Matthew May of Katy, Will Estell and his wife Amy of Oxford, Alabama, and Erik DeFries of Corpus Christi; and great grandchildren, Megan Steinberg, Matty May, Parker May, Channing Estell, Blake Estell, Bentley Estell, and Madison Steinberg.

The family wishes to thank the loving staff of Cinco Ranch Alzheimer's Care, Silverado Hospice, and Dr. A. Kantamani, with special heartfelt gratitude to longtime attentive caregivers Robin and Lisa.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 9, 2011, at the Schmidt Funeral Home Chapel, in Katy, Texas with Rev. Kim Meyers officiating. Burial will follow at a later time at Houston National Cemetery.

He was buried in July 2011 at Houston National Cemetery, Houston, Harris Co., TX, Findagrave #73020046.
