William Valentine DeWald
M, b. 9 April 1837, d. 13 January 1913
Note: In Tennessee William had grist mill, farm and store; in his spare time he was a carpenter and cabinet maker. In 1882 the family (children aged 7-22) left for Albert Lea, Minnesota where Ruble kin were established; then went on straight west to Dakota Territory (McCook County) where they bought what has since proved to be choice land, and on 800 acres they made a new home. They could have survived financially and prospered in spite of hazards of climate, prairie fires and pests, but they could not survive the local prejudice again William having been a Confederate soldier. A "shyster" lawyer found an "error" in the title and they lost everything. In the meantime their son, Henry, had gone farther west to Canyonville, Douglas County, Oregon, where Tennessee relatives (Kitzmiller/Hughes) had settled and pronounced the prospects "good," and William Valentine and the family with exception of two eldest sons moved to Canyonville and the Umpqua Valley, and soon after that to Cottage Grove where they had a fine home and a grocery store the last 15 years of their lives.
William Valentine DeWald was born on 9 April 1837 at Washington Co., TN. He was the son of Daniel DeWald and Mary M. Miller. William Valentine DeWald married Mary Ann Ruble, daughter of Rev. Henry Edward Ruble and Phoebe Ann Hunter, on 27 December 1859. William Valentine DeWald began military service Confederate Army, Civil War. He lived in 1882 at Albert Lea, Freeborn Co., MN. He died on 13 January 1913 at Cottage Grove, Lane Co., OR, at age 75. He was buried in January 1913 at Masonic Cemetery, Cottage Grove, Lane Co., OR.
