Nellie Weems, 80, volunteer
Nellie D. Weems, 80, of Portsmouth, died Monday morning, Dec. 26, 1994, at home after a long
illness. She was with her family. Born Feb. 3, 1914, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of James R.and Nellie Questel Distel. She has been actively involved as a volunteer at Notre Dame High School for 26 years. She assisted her sister, Ruth Kelso in establishing and coaching the Notre Dame girls track team. Together they coached the team to an SOC championship in their first year and won four other SOC championships in their 11-year coaching careers. She has served as a volunteer in the school cafeteria. She has been a volunteer and member of the Mercy Hospital Guild serving as past president of that organization. Nellie has been involved in the local tennis scene beginning when she was 9 years old and playing on the clay courts at the reservoir and Mound Park. She was one of the area's leading players in her prime and won several area and local championships. She continued playing tennis regularly until her illness prevented it. With her partner, Julie Peebles, she won several USTA women's 75 doubles championships and they were ranked fourth nationally. Nellie was a volunteer reader for the local Radio Reading Service. She was a member of the Manila Rebekah Lodge of the I.O.O.F. and the Ladies Auxiliary of the V.F.W. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. P. D. Weems, March 15, 1984; two sisters, Mary Eliabeth McNamara and Georgeann Distel; and two brothers, Roger and James Distel. She is survived by two sons, Jim Weems of Lexington, Ky., and Danny Weems of Portsmouth; two daughters, Penny McCaffrey of Warsaw, Ind., and Vicki Weems of Cincinnati; a sister, Ruth Kelso of Portsmouth; 11 grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was a graduate of the former Holy Redeemer High School and attended Ohio State University. She was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church her entire life. Services will be held at 10 a.m.Thursday at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Portsmouth, with the Rev. David Funk officiating, and interment in Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.Wednesday at Melcher Funeral Home in Portsmouth, where recitation of rosary will be held at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. The family suggests contributions be made to the Notre Dame Developement Fund, the Notre Dame Athletic Association for the girls track team and Hospice of Southern Ohio.

Age 66, passed away in Carson City, MI on December 22, 1985. He was born in Clinton County on June 5, 1919, and had been a lifelong resident of Lansing. He graduated from Lansing Eastern High School, was a veteran of W.W. II, serving in the U.S. Army, and was a member of Greenville Lodge #1939 L.O.O.M. Mr Ditsworth was employed at Motor Wheel Corp. for 42 years, retiring as Purchasing Agent in 1979. In his retirement, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Surviving are his wife, Eleanor; 1 son, Mark and daughter-in-law, Kathy Ditsworth of Lansing; 2 daughters, Mary Ditsworth of New Port Beach, CA and Linda, and, son-in-law, Harry Doesburg of Lyons; 3 grandchildren, Lisa and Scott Doesburg, and Matt Bird; nieces and nephews. Religious services will be conducted by Rev. Fr. James A. Murray of St. Mary Cathedral at 1:00 p.m. Thursday in the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel with interment in Deepdale Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Currin Skutt, Steve Stankus, Tom Dunlop, Jack Baylis, Russell Robitaille, and Floyd Foltz. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and from 7-9 p. Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the American Lung association.

Adah Larimore, wife of William G. Larimore, of Union Station, died at the Newark hospital Tuesday night at 10 o'clock.
She was born in Marion, Ohio, January 27, 1876, being the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clark and Martha Dix. She was married to Mr. Larimore April 29, 1903 and they are the parents of six children, Clark, Bryan, Marshall, Florence, Edward and Martha, who with the father are left to mourn her loss. She is also survived by her parents, one brother and one sister.
Funeral services were held at her late home in Union Station last night at 7:30 o'clock, Rev. Mellinger officiating. The remains were shipped to Marion this morning where burial will take place.
