Harry T. Downing, son of William and Effie(Kern) Downing was born in Clayton Twp., Adams County, Illinois on the 24th day of July , 1884 and departed this life at the General hospital in Des Moines, Iowa at 2:15a.m. Wednesday the 24th day of March age 41 years and 8 months. "Toss" as he was familiarly known to everyone grew manhood in the vicinity of Golden and no social activity among the young folks was complete without Toss. In athletics, if Toss Downing was in the game its success was assured. Generous hearted, ever ready to assist he was a general favorite with young and old and the message that he had passed to the Great Beyond was received with sorrow. He was united in marriage to Miss Daisy Kemp, of Camp Point, on the 3rd of Sept 1912. To this union two children were, born, Dorothy having passed away in infancy, and little son , Edwin, now 11 years of age.Stricken very suddenly with acute appendicitis, Mr. Downing was taken to the hospital Sunday afternoon, March 21st and at 7:39 p.m. an emergency operation was preformed. Surgeons discovered the Appendix in a ruptured condition and held little hope for his recovery. Serious complications followed the operation, the end proved not far distant. Some 14 years Mr. Downing and family have been residents of Des Moines. He held a responsible position as a city employee in the engineering department. His admirable devotion to his wife and little son, were the outstanding traits of his character. His energies were unselfishly spent for the happiness and welfare of his family. One sister, Mrs. Fairy Downing Donnelly and infant daughter, Dorothy, having preceded him in death. He leaves in bereavement the beloved wife and son, Edwin, of Des Moines, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. William Downing, parents, and one brother, Emery K. of Golden, One sister, Mrs. Ray Miller of Camp Point, besides many other relatives and friends. In the midst of his years , his life's biography ends and leaves us in silence and in tears. The funeral services were held at the home of his parents Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Laverne Barkley officiating. Arch Thomas, Fred Thomas, Russel Peck and J.F. Ross sang, with Mrs. J. F. Ross at the piano. BRITTON, Mich. - Madalyn E. Irwin, age 78, of Britton passed away March 5, 2010. Madalyn was born Nov. 14, 1931, in Ann Arbor, Mich., the daughter of Leland and Fannie (Wadsworth) Downing. On Aug. 30, 1950, she married Robert Irwin in Britton. He preceded her in death Sept. 14, 1993. She was a 1950 graduate of Britton High School. Madalyn was employed at Herrick Hospital, Britton Restaurant, as a bus driver for the Britton Schools as well as working alongside her husband on the family farm. She had resided at the Tecumseh Place II for the past three years. She was a past member of the Tecumseh Rebekah’s #338, Tecumseh Grange #66 and the State and National Grange. She was a member of the Bowling Association, bowling at Airport and Ten Pin Lanes. She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and sang in the church choir. Madalyn is survived by two sons, Charles (Debbra) Irwin of Britton and Calvin (Therese) Irwin of Britton; three daughters, Connie (Michael) Raymond of Clayton, Carol Withrow of Tecumseh and Cheryl (Norm) Seegert of Petersburg; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great- and great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Merlin (Myrna) Downing; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Robert, she was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Catherine Louise; a grandson William Lee Raymond; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Marie Irwin.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, March 8, 2010, at the Grace United Methodist Church, Britton, with Pastor Amy Mayo-Moyle officiating. Burial will follow in Ridgeway Cemetery.
