The only one of the Duncans that I ever saw was Martin. He visited us in Kansas City in the fall of 1900 and again in 1903 or 1904. He had a large family, about all grown, and his wife had left him prior to 1900. He filed on a homestead in Texas County, Oklahoma beside the one my Father had filed on, but he never returned to it and eventually released it to my sister, Nora Gillmore. She proved up on it prior to her marriage to Mr. Brooks. Martin Duncan was about Mother's age. I think Susan and Joseph were married in Tennessee and went to Illinois about 1850 with the Hunts and Michael Devault and other kin-folks.

Martin Kitzmiller Duncan was born on 14 July 1846 at Tennessee. He was the son of Joseph Franklin Duncan and Susannah C. DeVault. Martin Kitzmiller Duncan married Lillian J. Ayars, daughter of Martin S. Ayars and Sarah Taylor Meredith, on 5 October 1875 at St. Louis, St. Louis Co., IL, Martin and Lillie had several unnamed children who died in infancy.

Martin Kitzmiller Duncan and Lillian J. Ayars were separated before 1900. Martin Kitzmiller Duncan and Lillian J. Ayars were divorced before 1903. Martin Kitzmiller Duncan married Tryphena Margaret Brooks, daughter of Josiah Wright Brooks and Martha Damarias Selby, circa 1903. Martin Kitzmiller Duncan and Tryphena Margaret Brooks were divorced between 1910 and 1927. Martin Kitzmiller Duncan died on 4 March 1927 at Flat Branch Twp., Shelby Co., IL, at age 80. He was buried in March 1927 at Oddfellows Cemetery, Moweaqua, Shelby Co., IL.

     Mary Catherine Duncan was born on 24 February 1844 at Jonesborough, Washington Co., TN. She was the daughter of Joseph Franklin Duncan and Susannah C. DeVault. Mary Catherine Duncan married Nathan Francis on 27 September 1865 at Greene Co., IL, Nathan and Mary (Duncan) Francis began construction of their home in 1892. Their home was located at 220 Main Street, Moweaqua, Illinois. In 2012 this home was owned by Tim and Kim Richardson.

Mary Catherine Duncan died on 4 April 1917 at Decator, Macon Co., IL, at age 73. She was buried in April 1917 at Greenwood Cemetery, Decator, Macon Co., IL.

     Mary E. Duncan was born in January 1860 at Macoupin Co., IL.^1,2 She was the daughter of Thomas Duncan and Elizabeth Kitzmiller.¹

     Mary Lunnie Duncan was born on 12 July 1860. She was the daughter of William Wirt Duncan and Nancy Ann Starr. Mary Lunnie Duncan married Alexander D. Wright on 1 December 1883. Mary Lunnie Duncan died on 19 March 1884 at age 23.

     Maude Edith Duncan was born in 1892. She married David Oscar Williams. Maude Edith Duncan died in 1987. She was buried in 1987 at Sunset Hill Cemetery, Corning, Tehama Co., CA, Findagrave #8721493.

     Michael Jerome Duncan was born on 15 September 1944 at Council, Adams Co., ID. He was the son of George Gilmore Duncan and Wilma Merle Mitchell. Michael Jerome Duncan died in May 1985 at age 40.

     Milton W. Duncan was born on 2 October 1861 at Macoupin Co. (probably), IL. He was the son of James W. Duncan and Abigail Profitt. Milton W. Duncan died on 25 March 1863 at Macoupin Co. (probably), IL, at age 1. He was buried in March 1863 at Girard Twp. Cemetery, Girard, Macoupin Co., IL.

     Nancy Duncan was born on 7 April 1809 at Washington Co., NC. She married Caswell Cunningham Taylor on 29 January 1833 at Carter Co., TN. Nancy Duncan died on 15 May 1845 at Carter Co., TN, at age 36.

     Nancy Jane Duncan was born on 17 January 1826 at Washington Co., TN. She was the daughter of Joseph Duncan and Molly Allison. Nancy Jane Duncan married Dr. Samuel E. Lyon M.D. on 2 September 1851 at Washington Co., TN.¹ Nancy Jane Duncan died on 6 August 1899 at age 73.

     Nelson Duncan was born on 6 January 1824 at Washington Co., TN. He was the son of Joseph Duncan and Molly Allison. Nelson Duncan died on 28 November 1912 at age 88.

     Pansie Avonna Duncan was born on 26 August 1889 at Illinois. She was the daughter of Martin Kitzmiller Duncan and Lillian J. Ayars. Pansie Avonna Duncan married Harry Monte Rothwell, son of (?) Rothwell and Alice (?), on 9 March 1908 at Los Angeles Co., CA. Pansie Avonna Duncan died on 9 October 1920 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA, at age 31. She was buried in October 1920 at Inglewood Park Cemetery, Inglewood, Los Angeles Co., CA.

     Rachel Gambel Duncan was born on 23 September 1808 at Washington Co., TN. She was the daughter of Joseph Duncan and Molly Allison. Rachel Gambel Duncan married John Calvin Duncan on 10 August 1826 at Washington Co., TN. Rachel Gambel Duncan died on 6 September 1864 at Louisa Co., IA, at age 55.

     Rebecca Duncan married Martin Kitzmiller Jr., son of Martin Kitzmiller and Mary Elizabeth DeWald, on 22 September 1828 at Carter Co., TN, Martin and Rebecca were first cousins. Rebecca Duncan died in 1836.

     Robert Allison Duncan was born on 8 October 1810 at Washington Co., TN. He was the son of Joseph Duncan and Molly Allison. Robert Allison Duncan married Jane Edmonson Robertson on 13 March 1830 at Washington Co., TN. Robert Allison Duncan married Esther Barkley on 24 August 1853 at Washington Co., TN. Robert Allison Duncan died on 28 May 1898 at Leesburg, Washington Co., TN, at age 87. He was buried in 1898 at Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Leesburg, Washington Co., TN.

     Robert Marshall Duncan was born on 4 November 1913 at Lavinia, Calhoun Co., IA.¹ He was the son of William James Duncan and Stella Gertrude Gilmore.¹ Robert Marshall Duncan began military service on 22 September 1941 WW II service, enlisted, U.S. Army. He married Katherine N. Muller on 7 August 1945 at Weiser, Washington Co., ID. Robert Marshall Duncan lived in 1983 at Idaho. He died on 23 February 1990 at age 76.

     Robert P. Duncan was born on 10 November 1857 at Illinois. He was the son of Joseph Franklin Duncan and Susannah C. DeVault. Robert P. Duncan married Mary Elizabeth Sanders, daughter of Nicholas Denison Sanders and Sarah Abbie Lankham, on 15 October 1890 at Christian Co., IL, no children. Robert P. Duncan died on 15 October 1894 at Christian Co., IL, at age 36.

     Rosalee Jacqueline Duncan was born on 24 September 1932 at Orrick, Ray Co., MO. She married Claude F. Clevenger on 14 August 1950. Rosalee Jacqueline Duncan died on 7 June 2013 at Richmond, Ray Co., MO, at age 80. She was buried in June 2013 at Old New Garden Primitive Baptist Cemetery, Wood Heights, Ray Co., MO, Findagrave #111966222.

     Rose Marie Duncan was born on 20 November 1893 at Glendale, Los Angeles Co., CA.¹ She was the daughter of Joseph Lee Duncan and Matilda Steele Venable.¹ Rose Marie Duncan married John Dempsey Bolin, son of Helen R. (?), in 1918. Rose Marie Duncan lived in April 1930 at Antelope Twp., Los Angeles Co., CA.² She died on 16 September 1975 at Lancaster, Los Angeles Co., CA, at age 81. She was buried in September 1975 at Lancaster Cemetery, Lancaster, Los Angeles Co., CA, Findagrave #132700162.

     Samuel Cunningham Duncan was born on 11 April 1828 at Washington Co., TN. He was the son of Joseph Duncan and Molly Allison. Samuel Cunningham Duncan married Sarah Palmira Bethell on 8 September 1870 at Dekalb Co., TN. Samuel Cunningham Duncan died on 12 February 1885 at Dekalb Co., TN, at age 56.

     Sarah Duncan was born on 31 January 1796 at Tennessee. She was the daughter of Joseph Duncan and Ann Shaw.

     Sarah A. Duncan was born on 13 August 1849 at Tennessee. She was the daughter of Joseph Franklin Duncan and Susannah C. DeVault. Sarah A. Duncan died on 21 June 1878 at Shelby Co., IL, at age 28. She was buried in June 1878 at Westside Cemetery, Moweaqua, Shelby Co., IL.

     Sarah E. Duncan was born in August 1862 at Girard, Macoupin Co., IL.^1,2 She was the daughter of Thomas Duncan and Elizabeth Kitzmiller.¹

     Sarah P. Duncan was born circa 1830 at Washington Co., TN. She was the daughter of Joseph Duncan and Molly Allison.

     Thomas Duncan was born on 21 March 1821 at Tennessee.¹ He was the son of James Duncan and Sarah Hunt. Thomas Duncan married Elizabeth Kitzmiller, daughter of Henry Kitzmiller and Elizabeth Carr. Thomas Duncan died in 1893. He was buried in 1893 at White Hall Cemetery, White Hall, Greene Co., IL.

HOTELS
The Commercial hotel was built in 1869, and was first kept by John Carr, proprietor of the building. He kept it several years, and then let it to others. Since that time it has had a varied history. The present landlord, THOMAS DUNCAN, took the house in Aug., 1882, and it has met with its first success under his management. This success has been well deserved, as Mr. Duncan is a boniface who spares no pains to make his guests comfortable. He and his estimable family are a welcome addition to the city of White Hall. The house contains 20 sleeping rooms, besides the other appurtenances of a good hotel, and has a liberal patronage.

THOMAS DUNCAN, the present proprietor of the Commercial, was born at Jonesboro, Eastern Tenn., March 1, 1821. He is a son of James and Sarah (Hunt) Duncan, both natives of Tennessee. He lived with his parents until he had reached the age of 25, being engaged in farming with his father. In 1856 he moved to this state, and bought land near Girard, Macoupin County, where he was engaged in farming nine years. He then sold his farm, and engaged in the grocery business at Girard, in which enterprise he was engaged for 11 years. He then embarked in the hotel business in the same place, taking charge of the Enterprise hotel, which he conducted for about three years. From there he removed to White Hall, and took charge of the Commercial hotel. He was married, Aug. 7, 1856, to Elizabeth B. Kitzmiller, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Carr) Kitzmiller. They are the parents of nine children, eight of whom are living - Martha M., married to L. P. Smith, living at Palmyra, Macoupin county; Mary E., Sarah E., Ella B., Laura A., Katie J., Birdie Irene and Ethel V. All of these, with one exception, have been endowed with a marked talent for vocal music. The one deceased was an infant, not named. The family are devout members of the Baptist church, the young ladies being leading singers in the choir. Mr. Duncan is a man honest and upright in the fullest sense of the words. He is a republican, politically.

     Walter Duncan was born circa 1864 at Tennessee.¹ He married Elizabeth Klepinger, daughter of Newton Klepinger and Sarah W. Wolf, after April 1910.

     William F. Duncan was born on 10 March 1837 at Scotland.¹ He married Mary A. Markle in 1863. William F. Duncan died on 26 June 1903 at Iowa at age 66. He was buried in June 1903 at Olin Cemetery, Olin, Jones Co., IA, Findagrave #17151772.

     William James Duncan was born in October 1870 at Iowa.¹ He was the son of William F. Duncan and Mary A. Markle. William James Duncan married Stella Gertrude Gilmore, daughter of George Washington Gilmore and Josephine Arminta Kaufman, on 4 July 1899 at Jones Co., IA. William James Duncan lived on 2 June 1900 at Rome Twp., Jones Co., IA, Laborer.¹ He lived on 20 April 1910 at Garfield Twp., Calhoun Co., IA, Farming.² He lived on 16 January 1920 at Birch Lake Twp., Cass Co., MN.³ He lived on 15 April 1940 at McKinley Twp., Cass Co., MN.⁴ He died Possibly the William J. Duncan, 1870-1945, buried at Pine Ridge Cemetery, Pine River, Cass County, MN.

     William James Duncan was born on 24 February 1902 at Olin, Jones Co., IA. He was the son of William James Duncan and Stella Gertrude Gilmore. William James Duncan died on 28 April 1970 at Hennepin Co., MN, at age 68.

     William S. Duncan was born on 15 November 1870. He was the son of James W. Duncan and Abigail Profitt. William S. Duncan died on 26 October 1884 at age 13. He was buried in October 1884 at Girard Twp. Cemetery, Girard, Macoupin Co., IL.

     William Southern Duncan was born circa 1873 at Virginia.¹ He married Princess A. Gates circa 1902.¹
