Dr. Charles Rhea Earnest, 78, of G'Fellers Road, Chuckey, formerly of Knoxville, died Monday morning at his home.
Dr. Earnest was a widely-known Knoxville physician, having practiced 50 years before retiring in November 1997.
He was a 1938 graduate of what was then Knoxville High School. He was a 1942 graduate of the University of Tennessee of Knoxville and a 1944 graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis.
Upon completion of medical school, Dr. Earnest entered the U.S. Navy as a ship doctor. He was discharged in 1946 and entered Ohio State University to serve an internship.

He was a son of the late Bonnie (Johnson) and Charles Rhea Earnest Sr., and a direct descendant of Felix Earnest, who fought at King's Mountain as a lieutenant under John Sevier.
He was preceded in death by three sisters: Barbara Main, Carolyn Earnest, and Virginia Earnest; and a brother: Robert Isaac Earnest.
Dr. Charles Rhea Earnest, 78, of G'Fellers Road, Chuckey, formerly of Knoxville, died Monday morning at his home.
Dr. Earnest was a widely-known Knoxville physician, having practiced 50 years before retiring in November 1997.
He was a 1938 graduate of what was then Knoxville High School. He was a 1942 graduate of the University of Tennessee of Knoxville and a 1944 graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis.
Upon completion of medical school, Dr. Earnest entered the U.S. Navy as a ship doctor. He was discharged in 1946 and entered Ohio State University to serve an internship.

He earned his B.A. from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 1973, graduating with high honors and elected into the Phi Beta Kappa honorary fraternity. Howard was awarded a M.A. (1975) and a Ph.D. (1999) in anthropology from Harvard University as a student of Gordon Willey. He completed this graduate work with funding from a research grant from the Department of Anthropology, Harvard University; a USIA Academic Specialist Fellowship; a CIES Fulbright Senior Scholar Grant; a National Science Foundation Dissertation Improvement Grant; and a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship, from 1973 to 1976.
Howard did archaeological fieldwork in many parts of Latin America, including the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico; El Salvador; the Maya city of Copan, Honduras; and Tiwanaku, Bolivia. He was the forest archaeologist in the Cherokee National Forest for 15 years and surveyed and excavated at numerous archaeological sites in the Appalachian area and lower Louisiana. He taught Spanish courses at Tulane University, then taught Spanish at Holy Name of Mary Elementary, St. Joan of Arc Elementary, and Edna Karr High School in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Since moving to Illinois, Dr. Earnest taught anthropology courses at ISU and archaeology at IWU. He devoted his expertise to helping organize and classify the archaeological collections at IWU and the McLean County Museum of History.
