Death of Daniel Emmert.

Daniel Emmert died suddenly at his home, November 17, 1902, nine miles northeast of Red Oak on Monday morning, presumably from heart disease. While storing vegetables in the cellar he dropped dead. Only two of the daughters were at home at the time, Mrs. Emmert being at a neighbor's on an errand.

The funeral services were held in Pleasant Lawn United Presbyterian church Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock and were conducted by Rev. D. M. Montgomery, assisted by Rev. S. E. Dubois. There was a very large attendance of friends. Interment was in the Red Oak (Evergreen) cemetery.

Mr. Emmert had lived in this county 32 years. He was an excellent citizen, highly respected and esteemed by all who knew him. He was born in Carroll county, Illinois, February 9, 1844, and came to this county in 1870. He was a member of the United Presbyterian church of Pleasant Lawn, and had been a church member since 22 years of age.

Mrs. Emmert and eight children survive him. The children are Frank Emmert, Mrs. Nellie Keim, Mrs. Mamie Elliott, Mrs. Grace Lathrop, Mrs. Edith Selser, and Misses Mamie, Nannie and Elizabeth.

David Emmert

     David Emmert was born on 22 March 1804 at Emmertsville, Washington Co., MD. He was the son of Pastor John Emmert and Nancy Avey. David Emmert married Susan Price, daughter of Rev. Jacob Price and Susanna Baker, in 1825.1 Occupation: County judge and minister. Per 1913 History of Carroll County:

"… a correct history of Mount Carroll cannot be written without giving David Emmert and his family credit for the important part they took in the very beginning of Mount Carroll, which started with the building of the mill, nor the history of the press of Mount Carroll without including his family." in 1850. David Emmert died on 30 September 1857 at Carroll Co., IL, at age 53 suddenly in Mt. Carroll, Ill., on 30th Sept. our much esteemed brother David Emmert, aged 53. Settled in this country in 1839 and did much in building up the church here and improving the neighborhood. His death leaves a vacancy which cannot be easily filled. He was called to the ministry about four years ago. Leaves a widow and 8 children. From Gospel Visitor, Dec. 1857.1

Krimmel on 25 June 1932 at Wood Co., OH, Dorothy married Clyde N. Smyser on 3 SEP 1906, Sedgwick County, Kansas. She married Francis H. McSorley on 14 JUL 1915 at Chicago, Cook County, Illnois, and divorced him as of 28 APR 1927, Wayne County, Michigan. She had no children. Final rites for Mrs Elizabeth Emmerte Byerly, 73, who died suddenly Wednesday of a heart aliment, were conducted here at 2:30 o’clock this afternoon. Officiating minister was Rev. George Eller, minister of the Church of the Brethern at Cordell.

The aged woman had made her home for the past four (?) months in their entirety. Third street. Prior to that time she lived at 601 East Third street. She had lived in Beckham county for 23 years. She came here in 1910 with her husband John A. Byerly who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Byerly was born March 2 1860 at Mount Carroll, Illinois. She was married Mr. Byerly at Centerview, Mo., October 1 1883. Together they came to the Indian territory in 1901 and located here in 1910.

Surviving Mrs. Byerly are two daughters and a son and 23 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The daughters are Miss Marietta Byerly, instructor in the schools at Poteau, and Mrs. Leola Wolf, of Jones.

Burial was made in the Fairlawn Cemetery.


She was buried in December 1933 at Fairlawn Cemetery, Elk City, Beckham Co., OK, Findagrave #30101160.

Harold E. Broughton, pastor of First Methodist Church of Los Angeles. John apparently had a previous marriage, as he was listed as divorced on the 1940 census.

Cannot ascertain how long this marriage lasted -- she was a Simpson at the time of her death. No evidence of any children.

Elizabeth O'Neal Emmert died on 22 November 1981 at Los Angeles Co., CA, at age 72.

     George Emmert was born on 10 February 1809 at Washington Co., MD.1 He was the son of Pastor John Emmert and Nancy Avey. George Emmert married Catherine Stouffer, daughter of John Stouffer and Hannah Price, in 1831.

Emmert George, Retired; Sec. 12; P.O. Mt. Carroll; born in Washington Co. Md., Feb. 10, 1809; lived there 35 years; came from there to Carroll Co. by team, being six weeks on the way; arrived here in Oct. 1844; there was very little improvement here then of any kind, 35 years ago; bought a claim and paid government price for land, and engaged in farming; married Catherine Stouffer, from Franklin Co., Pa., in 1831; they have nine children, four sons and five daughters. George Emmert died on 12 February 1879 at Mt. Carroll Twp., Carroll Co., IL, at age 70.1 He was buried in February 1879 at Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll, Carroll Co., IL, Findagrave #129219426.

     George Melvin Emmert was born on 13 December 1856 at Carroll Co., IL.1 He was the son of Christian Emmert and Mary E. Long.1 George Melvin Emmert married Sarah Wagner, daughter of Michael Wagner Sr. and Susana Bowman, on 29 March 1877 at Dallas Co., IA. George Melvin Emmert died on 1 July 1941 at Kalispell, Flathead Co., MT, at age 84. He was buried in July 1941 at Conrad Memorial Cemetery, Kalispell, Flathead Co., MT, Findagrave #17952312.
