DIES VERY SUDDENLY

Monday's Waterloo Reporter containing the following:

The death of Mrs. W. H. Brown occurred Saturday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock following a brief illness at her home, 719 West Fourth street. Mrs. Brown was in her 28th year and was borne at Greene, where her father, W. H. H. Fleek still lives. After a short service at the home Monday morning, conducted by Rev. L. E. Brink of Union Congregational church the body was taken to Greene for burial.

The remains were brought to Green Monday at 10:40 o'clock and were taken to Rose Hill cemetery were Rev. Brink assisted by Rev. Fisher, offered prayers before the interment.

The remains were accompanied by Undertaker Woodruff, the bereaved husband, W. H. Brown and son Bert. Mr. J. Burns and Mr. and Mrs. Melinda, friends of the deceased, were also present at the burial.

Relatives here who were at the depot to meet the funeral party were W. H. H. Fleek, father of the deceased, brother Jay Fleek and family, M. Woodling and Homer Woodling and families and other relatives and friends. The casket and floral offerings were very beautiful.

Clara Belle Fleek was born in Dayton township, Bulter County, in May 1881, were she grew to young womanhood. Four years ago she was married to Joe Brown and a daughter was born to this union whom was adopted by W. Betts and wife of Shell Rock.

Deceased has been a resident of Waterloo the past two years and one year ago was married to W. H. Brown.

The Recorder joins in extending sympathy to the sorrowing ones.

Bertha Fleenor died on 9 April 1953 at Salem, Washington Co., IN, at age 70. She was buried in April 1953 at Crown Hill Cemetery, Salem, Washington Co., IN, Findagrave #142435284.
Note: Bertha first married Ralph Swaim in 1903 and had a son and daughter before he died in 1907. The marriage with Ulysses Anderson was very brief and ended before the May, 1910 census, in which she is listed living separately in Salem with her three children. She remarried to James G. Barrett in 1918, but by 1930 was separated or divorced from him and again using "Swaim" (misspelled "Swain" in the census) as her surname. Her headstone is inscribed "Bertha Swaim".

Hugh Fleenor
Hugh Fleenor, 85, Little York, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Scott Memorial Hospital in Scottsburg.
He was a member of Little York Christian Church and the Little York Masonic Lodge.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he also was a retired lineman and truck driver of Public Service Indiana.
He was born June 6, 1915, in Washington County, to Jesse and Nora Johnson Fleevor.
His wife, the former Faye I. Craig, survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Dale Fleenor, Little York; two daughters, Judy Allen, Little York, and Jeannie Tscheulin, Scottsburg, 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A Masonic service was held at 7 p.m. Saturday at Stewart Funeral Home in Scottsburg.
Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with Bro. Greg Shuler and Bro. George Trueblood officiating.
Burial followed in Scottsburg Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Little York Christian Church.

Note: The children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren mentioned in the above obituary are Hugh's wife's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren from previous marriages. Hugh apparently did not have any biological children of his own.

He was buried in February 2001 at Scottsburg Cemetery, Scottsburg, Scott Co., IN.

Bradley and Mary Hester Carter. Mattie Catherine Fleenor lived on 8 April 1940 at Kinderhook District, Washington Co., VA, with son Earl and his wife, and daughter Helen Tate and granddaughter Carol Anne Tate in the household.2 She died on 17 May 1952 at Benhams, Washington Co., VA, at age 64. She was buried in May 1952 at Bradley Cemetery, Carter Co., TN, Findagrave #97156324.

     Note: Howard Fleetwood and his brother George were placed in an orphanage and may or may not have been adopted by the Swanstroms, who adopted their sisters Madeline and Muriel, presumably shortly after the death of their mother in 1926 -- the Swanstroms are listed in the 1920 census with no children, and the 1930 census listings are annotated "Adopt." An online post by a relative indicates the boys were brought home by the Swanstroms for holidays.
