Biography

Dorothy Coil was born on 17 July 1925 in Buckland, Auglaize Co., OH. She died on 23 January 2023 in South Bend, St. Joseph Co., IN,

Obituary -- (Findagrave.com):

SOUTH BEND, IND -- Dorothy Coil, 97, died January 23, 2023 in South Bend, Indiana.

She was born in Buckland, Ohio on July 17, 1925 to Asa H. and Pansy (Roney) Coil.

Dorothy devoted her professional career to helping others learn.

After graduating high school in Lima, Ohio, she started working at the Lima Public Library. The librarians there spotted her talents and steadily promoted her. She used her experiences at the library as motivation to further her own education.

Dorothy earned a bachelor's degree in History from Ohio Northern University in Ada and then completed a master's degree in Library Science from Indiana University in Bloomington.

Her hard work benefitted the communities she served. Eventually she was responsible for ordering all the books and periodicals for the Lima library system.

In 1973, she joined the University of Notre Dame in South Bend. For over two decades, Dorothy was the lead biology and medicine librarian, supervising the collection and staff.

She retired with the faculty rank of Associate Librarian. Throughout her service, she helped countless library patrons pursue their curiosity and advance their studies.

She enjoyed sports, especially the Chicago Bears and the Chicago White Sox, and traveling, which took her across the United States and to Greece.

Dorothy occasionally journaled, writing short messages that illustrated her pragmatic, steady, humble approach to life. In sometimes terse, sometimes poetic passages, she meant to lift up her spirits or refill empty reserves of fortitude. Her extant journal entries leave a record of a quietly spiritual person privately meeting the hard realities of the world with perseverance and grace.

Dorothy is survived by several generations of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Neal Asa (Marie Ann) Coil and Wayne E (Lenore) Coil.

The Coil family would like to extend their appreciation to the medical professionals at South Bend's Memorial Hospital for their care and kindness.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at Memorial Park Cemetery, 3000 Harding Hwy, Lima, OH 45804.

Kaniewski Funeral Home, South Bend, IN is handling arrangements.

She was buried in January 2023 in Memorial Park Cemetery and Mausoleum, Lima, Allen Co., OH, Findagrave #249021649.

Family: Elizabeth "Betsy" Ward

DaughterNancy Martin (b. 1778, d. 1837)

Biography

Joseph Martin was born in 1740 in Caroline Co. (now), Virginia. He married Elizabeth "Betsy" Ward daughter of Bryant Ward and Nanyehi "Nancy"; this was a common-law marriage. Joseph Martin first married Sarah Lucas and had seven children, including Revolutionary War officer Col. William L. Martin who eventually settled in Middle Tennessee. After Sarah's death, Joseph married Susannah Graves in Henry County, Virginia. They had 11 children, all born in Virginia.

Per Wikipedia:

" With Betsy Ward, Joseph Martin had two children, one of whom might have been Nancy Martin Hildebrand (1778-183). The Native Indian connection of two members of the Martin family has created some confusion for some Martin genealogy researchers; Gen. Joseph Martin's brother, Capt. John "Jack" Calvin Martin, Sr., of his N.C. Rock House Plantation, a.k.a. Rock Castle Plantation, is often confused with his brother Gen. Joseph Martin. Capt. John "Jack" Martin, Sr. moved from Virginia to N.C. with his brother William Martin, Sr.. In N.C. Capt. John "Jack" Martin, Sr. married a Miss Emory, who was half Native American. She died early in their marriage. Her widower, "Jack," then married her sister, a second Miss Emory. This same Capt. John "Jack" Martin, Sr. and his Emory wife were the parents of a John Calvin Martin, Jr. who served as a judge on the supreme court of the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma, although he was only 1/4 Cherokee. This Oklahoma judge was the older cousin of the Tennessee judge of the same name; the son of Gen. Joseph Martin and wife Susannah Graves, as mentioned earlier; Esq. Judge, John C. Martin of Tennessee. There were two Martin cousins with the same name who both served as judges. Although they were born many miles and many years apart, their identities are sometimes confused by modern researchers looking at the names alone." Joseph Martin died in 1808.
