Noted Outlaw Killed

FORT GIBSON, Aug. 16.--The noted outlaw John Fields attempted to kill Deputy Sheriff Johnson at Braggs and was shot dead by J. Hungeford. The shooting occurred almost on the spot where Fields murdered Red Bird Cherokee, for which he was serving a fifteen-year sentence when he escaped two months ago.

After Bill's death, she remarried to a Taylor and lived at Stillwater after 2007. He died on 4 November 2005 in Bartlesville, Washington Co., OK,

Bill was the son of Leonard Wayne and Ella Elizabeth (Johnson) Estes. He was reared in Bartlesville, attending the Limestone Elementary School and graduating from College High School with the class of 1961. He then attended Northeastern Oklahoma State College. He was married to Candace Jean "Candy" Flemings on August 29, 1972 and they lived in rural Nowata County for eighteen years before returning to Bartlesville. They were the parents of two sons and two daughters. Bill was a retiree of Reda Pump Company with 43 years of service.

He was buried in November 2005 in Memorial Park Cemetery, Bartlesville, Washington Co., OK, Findagrave #40361002.
