John Junior "Jack" Upole was born on 11 December 1924 in Gleason, Mineral Co., WV; son of John West and Vergie Edith (Grove) Upole. He married Mary Elizabeth Rockwell daughter of Warren Rockwell and Gertrude Estella Buckley, before 1950; John was first married to Betty Jean Mitchell (1927-2006), about 1943, daughter of William and Mattie (Grimm) Mitchell. They had a surviving son, James William Upole (1944-2023). 1947 Pennsylvania Certificate of Death, file #3265, lists the death on 6 JAN 1947 of "Cat Z." Mitchell Upole, of rural New Salem, Fayette County, who had been born on 22 DEC 1946 at the same location. Cause of death was accidental asphyxiation in bedclothes. This was apparently Thomas Mitchell Upole, named in the obituary of Betty Jean (Mitchell, Upole) Rosner. On the death certificate, the parents were listed as John Upole and Betty Mitchell. Betty Upole, age 22 and divorced, seamstress, was listed on the 1950 census of Uniontown PA, page 73, as head of household, with a nephew, William Leighty, age 11, also in the household.

After Mary passed in 1975, John remarried to her widowed sister, Wilma.
